remained until Friday morning. They
came out from Medford, ineiuling to
go out on the Trail stage, but owing
to tho condition of tlio roads, Mr.
Petcrson'H car was ho complutely
wrecked that he was not ablo to uae
it, so had to do the next best thing,
and the best he could do was to get
a ' small runabout, to latko the mai,
and leave everything that he could.
Hut ho is not tho only one who has
troublo carrying tho mail, for the
men carrying tho mall from here to
Tlutte Falls had the sanio trouble,
for Tuesday Miss Ida Dlinlnp of Der

morning and tho mall and post was
so heavy and bulky that she had to

guest at the Sunnyside Thursday.
A few days ago I received a letter
from our daughter, Mrs. Grunt Show
of Portland, in which sho sent me the
accompanying clipping taken from a
Portland paper:
. " 'Old Jim Howard, famous moun
taineer character of southern Oregon,
went to Jail yesterday to start serv
ing out a $200 fine at the rate of $
:i day. Howard received the $200 fine
from Judge Heaii. after lie had been
found guilty by a fed'eral jury of pos
sessing moonshine whiskey Thanks
giving day. 'Old Jim.' as ho is affec
tionately known to resident of Klam
ath Falls, was formerly a licensed dis

Old Jim" Howard was for seve
ral years associated with his brother.

east and east of here and at the time
were generaly suspected of carrying
on the business of running an illicit
distillery, but finally the climate be-

some of their neighbors.
