To Exterminate
Ground Squirrels
Every person, firm, co-partnership,
company or corporation residing on,
owning, leasing, occupying possessing
or having charge of or dominion over
any land, building, whurf or dock In
fested with digger ground squirrels in
Jackson county, Oregon, Is hereby noti
fied to begin nt once to effectively ex
terminate and destroy all such DIG
GER GROUND SQUIRRELS.
The following poison for mixing and
Instructions for use thereof Is the
method most expedient and effective
to be used fur the extermination and
destruction of such ground squirrels
and Is horeby recommended, to-wlt,
alkaloid strychnine used on either bar
ley or wheat, barley preferred, mixed
according to tho following formula and
manner, to-wlt:
Hurley, clean grain 16 qua,k
btrychnine (powdered alkaloid
1 . ounco
Bicarbonate of soda (ba"f5 soda)....
1 ounco
Thin starch pas" Pnt
Heavy corn -"J"'"" V4 pint
Glycerin' 1 tablesiioonful
Suce-varinc 1-10 ounce
Tills material should be mixed an
follows: Mix thoroHghly 1 ounco of
powdored strychnine (ulkalold) and 1
ounce of common baking soda. Sift
this Into pint of thin hot paste and
stir to a smooth creamy mans. The
starch paste is madq by dissolving 1
heaping tablespoonful of dry gloss
starch In a littlo cold water, which Is
then added to pint of boiling water.
Boll and stir constantly until a clear
thin pnsto is formed). Add hi pint
heavy corn syrup and 1 tablospoonful
of glycerine, and stir thoroughly. And
-10 ounce of saccharine and stir thor
oughly. Pour this mixture over 16
nuarts of clean barley and mix well Bo
that each grain Is coated.
Onu quart of the poisoned grain
mixed ns aforesaid Is sufficient for
forty or fifty baits and this quantity
scattered along squirrel trails or on
clean hard places on the surface about
the holes will not endanger . Block.
Strychnine in any form other than the
IHiwdered strychnine (alkaloid) Is not
: effective In the above formula.
From the date hereof until May 1st
Is the niost effective tlmo to poison
and destroy the digger squirrels, as
they are Just emerging from their Hi
bernation. They are hungry and food
Is scarce. . '
The County Court of Jackson Coun
ty, Oregon lias secured a large amount
of strychnine and the other Ingredients
necessary for the mixture, and a quan
tity thereof has been mixed and is D.pw
on sale to the farmers or persons In
terested nt actual cost and may. be
had by applying to the undersigned at
his office In the. Liberty Building or at

moans said ground squirrels herein
designated, the County Court, ot Jack
son County, Oregon, will appoint a per
son or persons to proceed with the
extermination and eradication of such
ground squirrels, and the cost thereof
Incurred will bo assessed to such land.
