ONLY DIAMOND .
If WEST. IS
MUBPHESiBORO. Ar1iH- Mut. The'
only diamond mine thus fur discover
ed on the Western hemisphere is lo
cated in Pike county, Ark. in which
this hamlet is situated. The mine is
two and a half miles soith of here.
The diamonds are found in a "pipe"
the crater of an extinct volcano which
ages ago boiled up through the sur
face, had Its terrific heat chilled by
the waters of nn inland sea, and left
1)1 ts of carbon scattered throughout
tho peridotite, which now fills the
orator, to be pressed into diamonds
by the contraction of the rock. The
peridotite forms the original matrix
of the diamond and thus far tho only
diamonds found in the Western hem
isphere in their matrices, are those of
Pike county. Diamonds have been
found in some twenty-flve( states, in
Canada and South America, but al
ways in river ' beds where, geologists
surmise, they have been washed by
tho waters, or in places where, (t is
presumod they have been deposited
1y glacial action.
The first Arkansas diamond was
found in 1900 by John Huddleston
thoir owner of the farm on which the
sixty-acre "pipe" is located by accl
'dent. Huddloston observed outcrop
pings of tho gray-green rock, since
classed as peridotiteand came o the
conclusion that his hillsides contain
ed valuable mineral, perhaps copper.
After pecking around without find"
ing anything which looked to him
like mineral," ho picked tip a erystnj,
and then' one . day showed it to
some friends in Murphesborb. A I-lt-tlu
Hock jeweler pronounced it a dia
mond and made sure by verifications
by jewel experts in New York. .
