Si EVEN' years uro the talons of the Prussian eajfle poisoned the
) soil of Hi'liziiim. Tlitit poison has been (rrowinjr and festering
ever xince until today all Europe is suffering from iteute toxemia.
Some physicians thought the defeat of Germany meant the lanc
ing of the boil, and a rapid return to health again. But events have
disproved them. Either the disease hurl gone too far or the lance
did not go far enough. The most casual observer has known for
many months that some heroic treatment had to be applied at once, if
Europe were to be saved.
The occupation of Germany by France and Great Britain, may
provide the heroic treatment needed. Everyone hope's so. And per
haps the heroic treatment needed in Russia is being applied by the
latest revolution. Everyone hopes so again.
For this much is certain, as things were going, the situation wns
hopeless. With no change of heart, in Berlin, with no change of mind
in Paris, with confusion worse confounded in Petrograd, all Eu
rope at the gates of peridition appeared inevitable.
The present situation has at least the virtue of definiteness. The
allies can ill afford the expense of more militarism, but if the German
disposition can be rendered more tractable and German intelligence
more enlightened, it may be money well invested. To the east if the
present revolution can only effect the expulsion of two citizens,
Messrs. Trotsky and Leninc, the blood and treasure involved will be
well invested.
To go back to 1914 is impossible. To stand still in the swamp is
impossible. Therefore, to go ahead, in any direction is preferable to
the recent status quo and that is what the present developments seem
to signify, Europe doesn't know where it's going, but it is on its
way, much belter than to not know where you're going, and being
water-logged in the bargain.

THE SAFE COURSE.
I HAVEN'T sandbagged any man, or kidnapped anybody's
child; I've followed up my old time plan when all the world
was running wild. 1 haven't swiped a Henry car, or gathered in
illegal spoil; but I have pickled in a jar the small rewards of
honest toil. I pity men who rob and slay, who will not like good
scouts behave ; they never have a decent tiny between the cradle
anil the grave. There's no use talking, life's a frost unless wc
dodge all sin with skill; our breaks are made at frightful cost,
and every man must pay his bill. AVc can't he happy or serene
as through this world of ours we go, unless our records are as
clean as is the well known driven snow. Oh, some for long may
dodge the' cops, and carry on a course of crime, hut when we sin
all comfort stops, we cease to have a liully time. We have no
joy, no pence of mind, our nerves are racked our hearts are sore;
avengers seem to walk behind, and retribution stalks before. I
pity those who cheat and stealer slug a stranger for his roll ; their
lives are bleak, they never feel the peace that warms the white
man's soul.
