brink and wore dashed to death below.
One fell 1000 feet and his pack saddle
was .uninjured. Another fell 200 feet
with 160 pounds of T. N. T. which did
not explode. , . ,
The pack train was carrying mater
ial for the construction' of tho suspen
sion bridge across the Colorado rlvUr,
over a trail which was slippery with
ico and suow. The packors had just
led tho train beyond tho first turn on
the. trail and had gone to the rear to
untie the horses when ono of them
becrime excited and crowded the lead
horse off the trail.
Packer Homer J. Aran managed to
get among the excited horses and to
cut the rope between (hree struggling
animals and the rest of the train.
All materials for the bridge, includ
ing the cables, must -bo packed over
tho trail under direction of skilled
