Heidelberg resigned today after bo
r.aa toia District Attorney Brady
that he would have to substantiate
certain affidavits favorable to Thom
as Brady, convicted of an attack upon
Miss Jean Stanley.
The affidavits -were presented yes
terday with an application for a new
trial tor- Brady.
According to Heidelberg today.
Miss Stanley expressed sympathy for
Brady and gratification that he had
not been convicted on his first two
trials.
"If sbfe were brought face to face
with r.ie she would not be able to
den,'; her statements," he said.
Miss Stanley and Miss Jessie Mont
gomery, her companion, were bo
strong in their defense of Brady that
Heidelberg said he had been prompt
ed to go into court and make public
their conversations.
Weldelberg said he had conferred
with District Attornoy Brady as to
what course he should take and had
been told that she should not claim
exemption because he was in the at
torney's office.
Heidelberg added that' he.' felt he
should resign before making a state
ment. Affidavits which Heidelberg's
statement substantiates, said among
other things,- that Miss Stanley had
doctored: .... "
"I could be sent to the penitentiary
lor the things I said on the stand."

sists of seven members who will re
ccoive no compensation.

sion directs sugar buyers or sellers tb

ments covering all foreign sales con
tracts. Tho agreements must stipu
late that tho product they cover is
to bo refined or used by the buyer,
and not sold or offered for sale as
crude sugar. Infractions of rules will
:result in refusal to issue permits for
further shipments.
PHILADELPHIA,' Feb. 12. Detec
tives early today inadventently spoiled
tho capture of a man alleged to have
attempted to extort money from E. T.
Stotesbury, widely known banker and
member of J. P. Morgan and com
pany, New York, on a threat of harm
to him and his family.
A letter had been sent to Mr. Stotes
bury Instructing him to place a sum
of . money in a black box at the en
trance of a certain church. Detectives
carried out the instructions and ar
rested a workman who picked up the
box. He proved his innocence.
Detectives said a number of people
socially prominent have received simi
lar letters. . , .

tho stock market this week dwindled
to slender dimensions, the turnover
for the five full sessions being the
lowest of any corresponding period
for almost half a year. Movements
Were of a piece with these stagnant
conditions, only a few speculative fa
vorites recording more than nominal
changes. Investment rails were almost
entirely neglected but developed mod
erate heaviness later on the refusal
of the United States railway labor
board to reduce wages. Similar con
ditions prevailed In the bond market,
many old-time, or pre-war issues can
celling much If not all of their recent
gains, while most of the new under
wiitlngs fell below their subscription
prices.
Surface-wise the money market was
In sympathy, but the money tone re
mained firm. Foreign ex'-hang was
again subjected to the bewildering
cross-currents resulting from latest

the Catholic diocese of Cleveland, was
abandoned today by his physicians, the
bishop has been ill with pneumonia
