CAROL HEARING
IS P0STP0ME0
UNTIL THURSDAY
Arnold R. Carol, extradited from
California last week for the alleged
theft of a bulck automobile from the
Medford Auto company, was arraigned
In Justice of the Peace Taylor's court
this afternoon at 2 o'clock, and asked
for a continuance until Saturday. Cai-ol
claimed that two Portland attorneys
had been retained to defend him, and
that it would require much time for
them to come and get ready for trial.
The court, however, set the prelimin
ary hearing lor Thursday and commit
ted Curol to the county jail.
It is thought that relatives of Carol
in Virginia will come to his rescue and
endeavor to settle the case out of court
If possible. He is a nice appearing
youth, claiming to bo 19 years of age,
though when ho was dickering for the
auto ho signed a document giving his
age as 27 years.
Carol told the authorities that he
served In France during the war, and
when ho returned he was left a legacy
by his mother, who had died while he
was away. He spent this money, and
traveled over tho country. He says
that his present difficulty Is his first
brush with the law.;

Life Among Cannibals Shown at Rlalto
Vor.v goml pictures of cannibuls and
cannibal life are . Iiclng shown in the
Itiallo tbentro. They are the natives
of Frederick Henry Island, a small
Island separated by Dourga Strait
from the southwest coast of Dutch
N'ew Guinea. Svhicli Is situated directly
north of the most northern point of
Australia.
"Shipwrecked Anions Cannibals,"
the picture is named, lias the required
interest, for public attention.
The cannibals are decorated in every
IninKinable grotesque fashion, with
pit. reed noses and ear lobes, from
which are suspended heavy ornaments
and long pieces of wood and bono aro
inserted through the holes of some of
the noses. Tho men look ferocious
and dangerous with their painted
faces.
Gay Life of Paris
The gay life of Paris has been de
picted with unusual realism by Krich
von Strohelui in his latest production.
"Tho Devil's I'ass Key," which was
shown yesterday at the Page theatre.
Mr. von Slioheini has inserted great
realism inlo his new play. The race
scenes at the famous Grand Pix are
exceptional, showing I ho horses in a
close finish and giving views of the
crowds of fashionably dressed men and
women in the grand stands.
Sam do Grasse has the leading part
ill "The Devil's Pass Key." that of an
author living with his extravagant but
unsophisticated wile in Paris. She
runs up a largo bill at the shop of an
unscrupulous modiste, who suggests
that she get a rich admirer to pay her
bills.
A young American army officer

the story but has no Idea who the prin.

of a plav which is a ureat success.
I.aier he learns that it is his own wife
whose indiscretions lie has put upon
the stage. The climax of the photo
play has been remarkably handled by
Director von Strohelui.
