THREE YEARS AGO. TO BE PROBED AGAIN
MADISON, Wis., Jan. 26. An inves
tigation Into tlio death of Richard S.
Lawrence, South Madison broker and
jewel connoseur. who was believed to
have had $300,000 in cash, bonds and
jewels in his possession when last
Been alive three years ago, has been
started by Theodore O. Lewis, district
attorney. A fourth exhumation of the
body may bo ordered in connection
with the inquiry, it was said today.
'According to evidence .produced thru
previous investigations, Lawrence,
March 21, 1918, counted his money and
bonds In' his homo on Lake Monona,
arranging them in idles with his
Jewels. Included among the jewels
was a stomi known as the "orange dia
mond," valued at $100,000 and said to
have been brought from Africa in
1881 as a gilt for Queen Victoria of
Knghmd.

Lawrence went to a lawyer to make
a codicil to his will leaving part of his
estate to a step daughter, a motion
picture -actress who died later. He
was never again Been nlive. That
night a body was found on the Chicago
and Northwestern tracks. It was bur
ied as that of Lawrence but it was so
badly mangled that only his nephew
was allowed to see It. The nephew,
Kdward J. Lawrence, said it was the
body of his uncle. '
Later' the body was exhumed by the
state. Instead of tho mangled remains
buried, a niiilo body identified by sev
eral persons as that of Lawrenco was
found, Physicians testified that death
had come from a blow on tho head. A
mark on the head was tho only Injury
rovealed, nlthough the body originally
buried was said to havo been badly
torn. '
Another exhumation later rovealed
that tho body had been tnmpored with
again, according lo physicians, several
bruises having been Inflicted
Tho three undertakers who handled
tho body found on the railroad tracks,
testified In previous inquiries that the
body was mangled beyond recognition.

Houston, 16 years old negro, alleged to
have confessed to the killing of five
years old Frank Dally, whose mutilat
ed body was found in a field near bis
father's farm on the outskirts of Mem
phis late yesterday, lias been removed
to Nashville for safekeeping. Mean
while, detectives are endeavoring to
establish the accuracy of a statement
credited to theTnegro that the slaying
of the child was witnessed by a white
youth who, according to Houston's al
leged confession, aided in dragging tho
body to the field In which it was found.
A fourteen year old white boy was
arrested early today for investigation.
The -Daily child disappeared Monday.
His Ijody,'- partly covered with leaves,
his head bruised, throat cut and body
slashed and mutilated, was found by a
searching party yesterday. . -
Houston was arrested last night and,
according to officers, ' confessed that
he slashed the child's throat with a
knifs after the little Tellow had fallen
from a second story window of the
negro's homo. The only explanation
offered by. the negro, according to tho
sheriff, was that he was "afraid the
whlto folks would kill mo," because
the child was hurt. Houston Is said
to have denied that he mutilated the
body.
The. negro was taken from tho jail
lato last night tinder guard of a detail
'of police and sheriffs deputies and re
moved to tho Btate penitentiary at
Nashville. . '

kota and other state owned industries
