SPOKANE, Jan'. 19. The Spokane
State bank, In an outlying business dis
trict, was held up by two unmasked
men this afternoon who forced two
bank employes and a customer Into the
vault and escaped In an automobile
with a sum estimated at $1000.
OAKLAND, Cal;,; Jan. 19 Business
houses in the heart of Oakland suf
fered a total damage of more than
$100,000 today when a 15-inch water
main burst underground at a street

a score of buildings.- A manhole top
was shot many feet into the air by the
sudden torrent of water and two large
holes wore torn through the paving.

charging murder In connection with

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 19. The'
naval seaplane NC-5 which was forc-j
ed down and wrecked during a squad-1
ron flight from San Diego to Balboa, j
Canal Zone, has been "sunk by gun-j
fire," according to a report recelv-l
ed by tho naval radio here today. No
explanation of the message was re
ceived. ' '
Naval authorities here believed
that the NC-5 had become a menace
to navigation as she was drifting in
a coastwise steamer lane of Costa
Rica and as a .consequence was sent
to the bottom by the guns of somfl
naval-' vessel. Following her forced
descent off. the Gulf of Nocoya on
January 16 her crew was taken
aboard by the destroyer Mugford.
GALVESTON, Texas, Jan. 18. Mrs.
Edna Brown and M. S. Settle, both of
Galveston and aged about 35, were
Bhot to death here early today. Francis
Brown, husband of the' dead woman
surrendered to officers.
Mrs. Brown, shot through the heart
was lymg in tho seat of an automobile.
The body of Settle, shot through the
head, was found in the roadway.
