Something Different In Comedy
None of the characters in "Scratch
My Had;," now showing at the rase
theatre, behave quite like you expect
them to. There is a hero who performs
noble deeds of valor on behalf of the-lady-In
distress and sets nothing for
his pains but a "thank-you" and a
grateful smllp. There ia a villain who
Inhales spaghetti from a tin Kt and
wears a paper dicky" for a shirt he
surrenders to the hero at the insignifi
cant price of a whacked shin and a
poke in the ribs. There Is a jealous
husband who storms and raves like
most J. T.'s do but turns out to be the
best sort of a guy In the world. And
there Is a ludy-ln distress who, for the
first time in the annals of literature,
drama or movia, is sensible enough to
refuse an invitation to visit a man's
ins. Don't go ta see "Scratch Xl.v
Back" if you expecl the usual screen
comedy, put if you like now, different
things, you'll love this Innovation in
modern comedy drama.

TO
PLAY THE PIANO
Leopold Godowsky, the celebrater
pianist who will appear at the l'uge
theater on next Tuesday evening, Jan.
25th, was recently asked, who had
helped him solve his problems in the
early days of his musical career.
"My problems", came his witty nn
swer, "were personally solved and dis
solved. 1 consider myself practically
self taught, for a few months at the:
lierlin Hoch Schule, only served to
snow me mai i couiu leurn nmuius
from dull and conventional schemes of
instruction. The value of self teach
ing Is of course obvious. It stimulates
the working out of problems which
otherwise a diploma solves. Many
students feel that if they have done
work enough to receive a .ma,
they are entitled to rest on that visible
sign of learning und consequently
never develop any real Individuality.
However, It would be unwise to advo
cate self teaching for all. The great
majority need the guidance of a ma
tured mind and a ripened experience."
It is Interesting to know that Go
dowsky, thoiyjh undoubtedly an in
stinctive musician, even more than a
pianistic genius, has never allowed
himself to be guided by instinct whol
ly. With him 'there must he a scien
tific explanation for everything. Intu
itive inspiration and spontanloty are
duly recognized but they must be thor
oughly filtered through tho Intellect
to have truo value.
With a story, star and production
that bid fair to set the pace for screen
attractions for months to come, "Pas
sions Playground," -adapted from the
famous storv of Monte Carlo, "The
Guests of Hercules." by C. N. and
A. M. Williamson, will be shown at the
Kialto theatre, last times todaj
