HARRISON, Ark: There was a time
in the history of tire United States
when ?52, representing a year's loss or
saving to members of congress, was a
vital factor In the consideration of a
proposed moving of the seat of gov
ernment, and,; according tb an officer
of that same Congress, $52 a year was
"no trifling consideration." '
This bit of history is conta'ned In a
letter written by Charles Thomson,
secretary of the Continental congress
during the several years of its exis
tence to bin wife Hannah, an aunt of
President William -'Henry Harrison.
d'heletter is dated Princeton, August
1, 1783, the congress . then being in
session in the New Jersey town, and
was 'addressed fo "Mi-si. Thbmsdn,, Cor
ner or Spruce and 4 stree.t, fniiadei
phla." . I " " ' '
It was proposed that the residence of
concress bo removed to Elizabethtown
N. J., but, according to tile letter, there
was opposition on the ground , that
lodging in Elizabethtown would cost
i a week, whereas It could be obtain
ed for $3 a week in Princeton. -Wheth
er the "High post of living" In Kliza-
bethtbrh finally swayed the congress
in rejecting it is not disclosed, but
history records that the congress met
In ' Annapolis,' Aid., after ' leaving
Princeton, and at no time sat at Eliza
bethtown. , .. , '
,The letter, In part, which recently
came Into the possession of Mrs. Hex
Yvorthington, of Harrison,- a '. descen
dant of Mr. Thomson, follows: ' ' ' "
."Dear Hannah: . , , ,
"I- httve tdeelve'd ydur letters dated
Monday ,12 o'clock .and Tuesday .10
o clock at night and acknowledged the
receipt of theni. . . . Mr. Rend was mis
Informed respecting the adjournment.
They met on Monday but they might
as well have adjourned till time time
for any business they have done. I aril
very apprehensive that nothing biit
some calamity will awaken the states
td a sense of their sltuhtidn. : '
"... The president of congress has
not provided a House for himself nor
is likely he will find one here to suit
him. I find Elizabethtown has been
talked of at his table as a proper place
for the residence of congress. He has
a house there which he says has twen
ty rooms and Vbich he win. let for the
use of "the. president.'. -Jt Is true the
place IS ' Infested with nibsu'itoes Jn
summer 'arid 'lying -.low "and' near
marshes may be liable to lnteoiilttents
in the spring and fall, but these are
trifling when it. is -considered that by
fixing the residence of congress there
the vkiue of his estate will be increas
ed and he will have an opportttnlty of
letting his house at a good rent. But
yet 1 aril inclined to believe this will
be opposed by Ills colleagues; for Mr.
Con (lit has found a lodging in this
town at 3 dollars a week ; which en
ables him to lay tip money. And there
is reason to fear that, at Elizabethtown
which is so near New York, it will
cost film at least fduh 'This would be
a ciear loss of 52 dollars a year which
is nb trifling consideration, and which
I daresay will have , due weight with
some others. There . are other weighty
considerations which nilght- be men
tioned.
