THE LESSON OF SUNDAY'S FIRE.
M
EDFORD lias been particularly I'oittmiitu in iU fir loss. This
uouil i'm-tuno in spite of last uifrhtV destructive blaze, may be
yuid to still bold sway. For only t-xeeptiimally efficient work of the
lire department under a heavy handicap and the gallant aid of volun
teers, saved the Oarnett-Oorey building from being a mass of ruins
today.
hast summer the State Fire Marshal's office inspected the city's
fire equipment and made a report urging among other things, spec
ial purchases for fighting n basement blaze. Fire Chief Liitrtou, par
ticularly, emphasized the need of this equipment.
Last night's fire certainly demonstrates the necessity of securing
this equipment at once. It is the possible, but unexpected hazard,
that should he provided for. Better excessive zeal in the prevention
of conflagrations, which may seem remote than the sorrow of property
owners viewing the smoldering ruins of great masses of property.
In the Kudu storage fire and Sunday night's fire Medford has had
ample warning. Fortunately, the city has one of the most efficient
and best directed fire-fighting forces in the state. But it is not only
poor. gratitude, but false economy to handicap such a force with in
adequate equipment.
Now is the. time to give the fire department what it imperatively
needs. And the first purchase should certainly be modern equipment
for fighting a basement blaze.

I
YOU BUY a car you think is great, a bus that's strictly tip to
date. Your breast is filled with wholesome pride when you
go forth to take a ride, for you have saved n long, long while
to buy a boat that's quite in style. You feel, while gliding down
the street, that, life is sumptuous and sweet; you're bubbling o'er
witli genial mirth, good will to men and pence' on earth. And
when you park your ear downtown, up comes J. Pumpernickel
Brown. "Great Scott!" be cries; "JcliosopliuM I wouldn't
own a van like that! Oh why in blilzen did you blow for such a
cheese the hard-earned dough f Of all the lemons that's the worst,
among the gold bricks it is first. Its working parts will break
like glass, it is a swine for oil and gas." And so this omnipresent
jay has knocked the pleasure from your day, and pulled a cloud
across your sun, and spoiled your little slice of fun. In every
street of every town there is a Pumpernickel-Brown who can't be
satisfied or glad unless ho makes another sad. His cheap remarks
should not destroy the cheerful: neighbor's honest joy. but joy's
a thing that soon looks sick when some one hits it with a brick.'
And so this Piuiipernickel-Brown distributes sorrow up and
down.

Knfoi-cc the Speed Law
To tho editor: Yes, It is high time
the laws wore enforced! Hut how?
You suggest reporting cases: that
might he very well to some officials
but when raHes number of car, etc.,
mo reported to Medford councilmeii.
as has been done, they treat the mat
ter ii8 a Joke. Tilts is not hearsay
hut an actual happening. If Medfoicl
would put on an extra policeman or
two to seo that drlvors obeyed the
laws, also that pedestrluiiB oboyod
the laws, a great deal could be ac
complished. If .Medford spent hei'
money for protection for her people,
instead of for so much hot air und'
for policenum to do necessary work
Instead of having them try Store
doors to see that they nro locked, wc
might all be better off. -I'd suggest
that ouch storekeeper see to locking
his own door and let the police do
moro necessary work. I would
suggest that drivers learn a few fun
damental rules, bucIi as, "the man to
your light luia the right of way," etc.
Also that Joyriders bo fined to the
limit ami names and addresses' of
both girls and men bo published.

For all these years my Rtomach

at limes I could hardly stand it, and
sometimes I had terrible. fainting

had no energy, felt tired and worn
out all the time und when I began
taking Ta nlac wjis in a badly run
down, weakened condition.
"After taking the first bottle of
Tanlac I began to feel stronger and
better than 1 had in years, and as 1
continued taking it my improvement
was so great that in a short while I
was a well man. 1 now havo a splen

never have any trouble afterwards.
I am entirely free of rheumatism and
have not had one of those terrible
fainting spells since T started taking
Tanlac. 1 never have that tjred, worn
out feeling and am always ready for
my work, which 1 can do without a
