Delivery wagons began backing up
to the Elks tomp'.e this - morning
where thfiy were loaded with the "pro
visions and other good things which
are to be the Christmas treat of the
Elks lodge to the poor and needy
families in the city and Vicinity. All
the goods were delivered today and
brought Christmas , cheer to . many.
Kor the most part only provisions
and edibles of a substantial nature

and' the like were given. Of course
there were some Christmas dainties.
, The Elks special investigating com
mittee had examined Into each needy
case, and the delivery in each In
stance was made up in accordance
with the needs of that special case.

ON CHRISTMAS DAY
Mayor Gates was In an unusually
amiable mood today; . which, was
thought to ha duo to tho nearness of
Christmas until ho -explained-that. -it
was his birthday. He then related
that he arrived unexpectedly in" tills
world 49 years ago, a week ahead of
his anticipated birth. He has beeii a
little bit previous over since.
"My parents only, had two. children
then," said the mayor, "and llkat
Christmas eve, father, who was then
a- construction foreman, went down
to a nearby drug Btore to buy the two
children a present and was hesitating
whether to' purchase two certain"
presents, which were marked at fifty
cents each, when the druggist offered
to-throw in tho only remaining pres
ent of that kind in stock all three
for a dollar. :
"Now three presents of a kind were
too much, jut it was such & great
bargain ruiner count not resisi, uuu
so he carted the presents home. A
lew hours later I arrived and that
present came in handy."
Christmas day will be the quietest
Saturday in 'Medford for years past,
as all the stores, offices and other
places of business except restaurants,
confectionery places and cigar stores
will be closed.-
