CilK'AOn, June !). While com
mittees continued to grind away at
organization preliminaries the repub
lican national convention went thru
the motions of a second day's session.
Delegates assembled at the Coli
seum with their views as to who shall
lead the party at the polls next No
vember still a mystery, even to them
selves.
The convention escaped a second
keynote speech by the selection of
Senator Lodge as permanent chair
man, thus following the plan of 1912
and HUG of making the temporary
organization permanent.
Today's business consisted of hear
ing a report of progress from , the
committee framing a platform and a
report from the credentials commit
tee which makes up the permanent
roll.
Missouri got back her two lost
delegates, thru last night's action of
the credentials committee which re
verBed the national committee's, dc
cision that conditions in the elector
ate in Kansas City were so bad it
would not seat any of the delegates.
That restored the total number of
delegates in tho convention to 984
and the number necessary for n nom
ination to 41).'!.
The overturning of the national
committee's decision in the Tennes
see contest also came as a surprise.
Robert It. Church of .Memphis, re
puted to be one of tho wealthiest and
most influential negroes in the south,
had been seated by the national com
mittee after a straight out black and
white fight in which the whites
chnrgod that the negroes hud bolted
tho convention. Church, said to fa
vor Lowdea, was seated by tho na
tional committee, and had the back
ing of many prominent members in
his fight. The credentials committee
threw him out. The white contestants
appealed to the committee lo take the
republican organization in .Memphis
"out of the hands of negro domination."
