1000 ATHLETES
AT
PHILADELPHIA Willi more Hum
1000 entries the forty-fourth minus
truck nnd field championship irnme
of the Inter-collegiitte Amiitcur Ath
letic association of America will he
staged nt franklin f ield Here on J n
dav nnd Saturday (Mav 8-'20). In
many respects the meet will be the
most important staged liv the nsso
uintion in some years. The perform
ances of the winning athletes take on
added interest duo to the proximiiv
of the Olympic (lames and the col
lege track coach whose pupils suc
ceed in capturing the point trophy and
championship, will stand out promi
nently ns n candidate for the posi
tion of trainer oftho American Olm
pic team which will represent this
country nt Antwerp. .'
The return to normal .conditions in
college (athletics following several
years of war activities, also brinm
competition bnck to the high plane
which always marked those titular
contests. More than 30 colleges and
universities are expected to be rep
resented by teams ranging from 10 to
40 individual ntldetes, including two
strong contenders from the Pacific
const. California and Stanford, with
excellent winning records made earlier
in the season, will be tho far-west
invaders, but it is not expected that
the middle western institutions will
figure in the final result of the meet
ns the Western Conference games set
for Juno 4-5 arc occupying the at
tention of the nthletes of that section
to nn unusual extent .this season.
Close followers of college track
athletics are extremely cautious in
forecasting tho winner due to the
widely distributed 'strength of the
material this year. Cornell, Pennsyl
vania, Princeton, Penn. State, Syra
cuse, Yiile nnd several other promi
nent institutions have one or more
star performers in either track or
field events and the prowess of the
invading nthletes from the Pacific
coast is a factor that must be
reckoned with in apportioning tho
points.
Since the initial meet, held in 1870,
Ilnrvnrd lins won the greatest num
ber of championships, tho Crimson
total for the past 4il games being 13
victories. Cornell nnd Yale arc tied
for second place with nine victories
each and Pennsylvania is a close third
with eight. Cornell has won the last
five games the Ithaca university
record running back to the 1014 meet.
Owing to the war tho title contests
were not held in 1017.

Thanks Paper Support.
To the Editor:
In behalf of those citizens who nro
deeply interested in the future of this
great state and of its standing
throughout the country, I wish to
thank you for the great work you did
in giving information to the public
relative to the elementary educational
bill duringlhe recent campaign.
Indications are that the bill has re
ceived un immense mnjnritv. and I
feel that it is through the insistent
nnd consistent enmpaign of educa
tion carried on bv the press oi' tiic
state that tho people have been led
to sco the justice of enacting this
measure.
Very Truly Yours.
