NOTE OF FORUM
The forum of the Clinmher of Com
merce yesterday noon at the Holland
Hotel was exceedingly well attended
and anions the euests wero Lynn D.
Mownt, secretary of the Ashland
Commercial Cluh, W. J. Moore, an at
torney from Ashland, 1$. I. Klliott. of
Portland, a representative of the L.
C. Smith Typewriter Co., II. C. Stod
dard, formerly connected with the
California-Orcnoii Power Co., at Med
ford, hut now located with that coin
jinny tit San Francisco. Mrs. If. A.
Davis of .Wichita, Texas, a truest of
Miss Annie Keliehor and Col. liohcn,
i A. Miiller of Portland, who many
i'years ago, was a resident of Jack
j sonville.
j Mr. W. E. Crews was chairman of
the forum and Rev. 1). K. Millurd led
the sinaine of several new sontrs.
It was suuirested that an effort he
A made to' have the paving between
ilioirue Hiver and Gold Hill completed
I before the contractors begin the pav-
ins of the stretch south from la
J Josephine county line, no action how-
!ever, being taken retrnrdins same.
Now that the county road bonds
and the state bond limitation meas
ures had been adopted, the chairman
requested information resiardin? the
road construction (program and it
i? was explained that there would proh
j ably be no work done on Jackson
county roads this summer by virtue
of the money voted, but that federal
and state aid was now possible ami
this money would be spent on the
roads next summer on condition that
Jill other factors regarding same
would be in conformity with good
business judgment.
Mr. W. K. Lil.iegrnn gave a very
interesting talk on oil development
i.nenv Medford and gave as his ouin-
ion that oil was here, but as to its
vheuig in commercial mtantitics was
Iyet to be determined by the drilling
now going on. With a plentiful sup-
P'.v of water now developed, with a
; new powerful boiler and an experi
enced new oil drilling crew from the.
oil fields of California, no further
delay in drilling was anticipated.
i Itcsoliition of Sympathy
' The sudden death of County Com
! missioner George Owen of Ashland
'was announced and a committee was
appointed to draft a resolution .of
sympathy to the family and friends.
Tho news of the death of Mr. Owen
was received with regret in thut he
was considered an exceptionally ef
ficient county officer.
This being "Forest Protection
I J Week." the subject of "Forest Pro-,
lection ' was Jed by Uapt. II. J.
jSKberly of the forestry service, who
; presented some very interesting Jati
regarding, the standing timber, both
'i privately owned and that within the
national forests. Ho warned against
.the loss of this timber and urged every
yitizen in this locality to act as an as
sistant to the forestry men in pre
'venting its loss bv fire. Care should
" be taken by every one with lighted
Z cigars, cigarettes, pipes, matches and
"especially in regard to fires left by
campers and hunters. liurncd tim-
dber pays no wages and ho estimated
1 1 that for every thousand feet of tim-
Iber destroyed eight dollars was lost
to the community in wages.
Guard Forests
Mr. Eberly urged Hint every man
and woman in this locality act as a
self-appointed guardian to. assist in
the preservation of the forests against
fire. Mr. Crews suggested that every
automobile owner secure a windshield
i sign from the Chamber of Commerce
vhencver thev intend to make a tri"
into the forests, so that the same
may be a constant reminder to all
who they may come in contact with
to bo careful to "Put Out Keep Out
Forest Fire."
Mr. II. C. Stoddard was greeted
with great applause when called upon
lor a few remarks and he expressed
himself as being pleased to have lind
the opportunity of meeting his many
friends here nnd that Southern Ore
gon always had a warm spot in his
heart.

One hundred million dollars in gold

been given credit for producing, was
n statement made by Mr. Hubert A
Miller, who formerly lived at Jack

cietv of this district in the eariv dnvs
of development. Daring- 1851 and
again in 1865 immense findings of
cold were made near Jacksonville ami
the stute of California wns given
credit for bavine produced it be
cause it was sent to San Francisco
to be milled. After the miners lun!
left litre for another newlv opened
gold field, more than four thousand
chinamen were employed in gold mi"
mg near Jacksonville. This gold was
shipped to China and no record of
the amount was ever made known.
Mr. Miiller wns a most enthusiast
Oregon optimist. His words were an
inspiration to the ones who had the
Pleasure to hear him nnd his advice
to not permit one word of doubt or
'in expression of pessimism to become
Public of what this southern Oregon
couutrv really is, should be followed
