Beginning with this evening, a ser
ies of road meeting will bo held in
the county which will take in the
nexi three evenings. These, meetings
are for the purpose of explaining to
the voters county road bond pro
position as well as the slate 4 per
cent bond limitation measure. It is
evident that some of the voters have
not givon thoro consideration to these
measures and not knowing their ad
vantages, are liable to vote against
them. These meetings will no doubt
be of great benefit in that the speak
ers will explain these measures
which will give information such as
will permit the voters opportunity to
intelligently vote upon these ques
tions.
Several years ago, this county had
a warrant indebtedness of something
over a hulf million dollars. Our
county commissioners by wise fore
thought have gradually reduced this
indebtedness to that of $140,000.
Two mills has been levied each year
for the past few years, which has
raised annually ? 100,000, so that in a
yoar and a half from this Unto the
entire balauco will havo been paid in
full.
m A $('00,000 I tonus
With no f 11 rllier miltage tax on
warrant indebtedness, the county can
well afford to issue ?:00,000 road
bonds as the sanio would not increase
the taxes over what they have been
right along. By the county putting
up money for roads, it Is possible to
got $900,000 of stute and federal
funds, making a. total of $1, -100,000
to be srtent for roads in Jacksoj
conn ty.
There is a well defined program
of where this money Is to be spent
In the county and the commissioners
are pledged to spend ft accordingly.
Not one cent of it will go on the
Pacific Highway, In fact every dollar
will go Into what might be termed
rural roads.
Among the highways which are to
be' improved are that of the Apple
gate-Uuch with $200,000, Sams Val
ley with $100,000, Ashland-Klamath
Falls-Green Springs $300,000 and
the Trail-AIedford-Crater Lake road
with that ol $800,000.
-1 ler Ont Inci'oiLse
In order to get federal aid, the
state must bo in position to match
the five to seven million dollars of
fered the state. This will necessitate
a change In our laws whereby the
state is permitted to bond itself for
4 per cent of its valuation instead
of that of 2 per cent.. Statebonds fpr
roads are issued by virtue of there
being so much money collected in
auto licenses and tax on gasoline
which is more than enough to pay the
interest and sinking fund for these
state bonds, without raising the li
cense fees on automobiles nor in
creasing the fees on gasoline. Under
these conditions it would be unwise
not to vote for the per cent state
road bond limitation act which is on
the ballot for next Friday.
The county commissioners are
pledged not to issue the county road
bonds unless the same are matched
Therefore, If the t per cent limitation
act is not passed, the county author
ities will be unable to comply with
the requirements and thoro will be no
road building of a permanent charac
ter in Jackson county for some time
to come.

STORM IN BUTTE
Due to unavoidable circumstances,
the out of town speaker, who was to
discuss the subject of tourist develop
ment, will not be in Mi'dford on Wed
nesday of this week and therefore the
program had to be re-arranged and
a number of local speakers are to
present the question ol' how to obtain
a greater trade expansion. This sub
ject is of vital Interest to every busi
ness, man in Modford and they should
lend their assistance in solving this
problem by attending the Forum to
morrow, which will be held at the
Holland hotel.
A number of ideas as to trade ex
pansion will bo advanced at tomor-j
row's Forum by the business men
themselves. One of their number,
Mr. John C. Mann, will be tho chair
man of the day. Mr. Mann has re
quested that a special ed'ort be made
to get out all of the business men for
this; luncheon and they enter into the
spirit of tho discussion whicli after
all means dollars and cents into the
pockets of the Modford merchants.
Last week soventy-five members
and guests attended tho Forum
luncheon. There ought to be more
than that there tomorrow as the sub
ject is one which should bring out
every business man. The Forum is
the medium whereby tho expression
of Ideas is given full consideration
ind which may then be recommended
lo the board of directors of the Cham
ber of Commerce to work out. The
Modford Chamber of Commerce has
a definite program before it and its
operation is by appointment of apec-
ial committees for specific purposes.
There is no limit to tho capacity for
tho work wihch this organization can
accomplish, providing the committees
perform the duties devolved upon
them by tho board of directors. A
dead committee is worse than none at
all, because they are holding buck the
development of certain things thoy
aro charged to accomplish.
Members will meet promptly at
noon nt tho Holland lobby. Luncheon
will bo served at 12:10 and adjourn
ment will be tulton promptly at 1:15
