s WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS
'-pIIE DEATH of William Dean llowells comes as a
-- gentle reminder of a generation that has passed.
Characterized six years ago by. William Toward Taft as
"the greatest living American writer and novelist" the
dean of American' letters, poet essayist dramatist and
editor, Mr." Ifowells, nevertheless belonged to the literary
schooj of Longfellow, Lowell and Holmes, rather than the
school ot the modern American realists.
His greatness will lie not in his 'matter so much as his
treatment, jiot in his force and vigor, so much as his style
and gracious humor, not in his genius and vital charaeteri
zations, so much as Ins faculty for" expressing his own
spirit of culture and idealism ,in artistically harmonized
torary symbols. " " ' ' ' '
In tins present age of audacious innovation, with the
world scrambling for new sensations, with jazz competing
with pep lor public tavor, with the old-tasluoiied moralists
beating a strategic and rather undignified retreat, before
the offensive of cheek-by-jowl best sellers, it is refresh
ing to contemplate tne ouiet (liirnitv. tne wholesome and
rest I ul atmosphere, with which the Editor s Easy Chair
was for so many years surrounded.' ' '
Primarily a poet and artist, William Dean llowells
nevertlicloss took a keen interest in current affairs. He
was iastidious without being exclusive, he was primarily

in socialism, but the modern direct actionist merely
amused him.
I cannot see" ho declared, "that tho remedy for oxlstlng conditions
lies anywhoro else. Hut If it is to bo a remedy it must como slowly.
Violent revolutions do not permanently solvo such problems."
"He has the manhood of an apple blossom," shouted i
son) box' orator in Madison Square, but Mr. llowells was
undisturbed. He had demonstrated that manhood need
not be vitiated' by good manners.
On the subject ot woman surf rage Ins opinion was de
cided:

Mr. llowells died when all rational beings would like
to die, when their work and life is over. He would have no
place in the age that is dawning, he would not understand
the age, the age would not understand him.

Tnpoworms nro not so "popular"
as they used to be. This Is chiefly
duo to our more nccurato knowledge
of food and its preparation. The

two "IiosIb" or animals to live In.
Thoro aro, in other words, two differ

SOME people seem to regard the presidential primary
as .i horse rnee. Their onlv interest, is in backintr
tho betting favorite. Such people promise to attain about
as much success as most amateurs who play the ponies.
When the race is over, they won t have even their "prin
ciple" left.
Jmr this is a preferential primary. People arc asked
to vote for the candidate they prefer, not for the candidate
they think a majority of their fellow citizens prefer. The
voter who In his heart prefers Wood, but votes for Hoover,
or prefers Hoover but votes for Wood, or prefers Lowden
but votes for Johnson, for fear he may waste his vote, is
wasting his vote at the outset.
If you have made up your mind who is the best man
in the race, from your standpoint, have the courage of your
convictions and vote for that man. An honest vote is never
wasted. But a gambler's vote is worse than wasted, for it
strikes at the very framework of our preferential system,
and renders any primary a farce.

BAD LUCK.
IT IS SULDOM ills are single; in a regiment they
rise, and our scalding teardrops mingle wtih the
tears of other guys. When a blaze calls out the fire
men, there'll be seven in a row, while the bards and
kindred lyreinen chant the litany of woe. Now a tire
sustains a puncture, in a long cross-country run, and
the driver, at this juncture, knows his grief is but be
gun. Not a parasang he'll travel, but a tire is running
flat; tacks and nails and chunks of gravel all contribut
ing to that. To the morals undermining are such griev
ous (lungs as these, and his language hot and shining,
wilts the leaves on near-by trees. Things go wrong at
early morning, wrong when from your conch you start,
and you take it as a warning that the day will break
your heart. For our evils come cavorting, not, alas, ns
single spies; but in legions they come snorting, as we
sadly swat the flies. J5ut they'll soon have run their
courses, and the luck will change awhile; from our woe
we'll have divorces, and we'll spring the old time smile.
