Tho winner of the gold medal in
tho national school contest for the
best essay on "The Benefits of Enlist
ment in the United States Army" was
Donald L. Campbell, a fifteen year
old student in the junior class of the
Clinton, Iowa high school. His essay
is as follows:
As Horace Greely once said "Young
man, go west!" we not, say, "- Young
man, join the army!" Why It is tho
big opportunity of the age.
Are you physically weak?
Health Is the first wealth, and the
army is a health builder. It provides
wholosomo food, clean, comfortable
quarters and surroundings, proper
clothing and medical attention, when
necessary. Physical exercise is com
pulsory, and every encouragement is
given athlotics. Theso, with outdoor
life, mako men straight, strong and
healthy.
Oo you seek an education?
lYou can attend school at any army
post or camp and study grammar and
high school subjects.
Would you lonrn a trade?
The government has recently ap
propriated ?2,UOO,000 Tor tho estab
lishment and maintenance of voca
tional schools where you can learn to
be a mechanic, auto repair man, elec
trician, telegraph operator, chemist
or almost anything elso you wish.
These courses prepare you for a re
turn to civil life or continued aorvice
in the army.
Do you long for travel and adven
ture? Join tho army. You can be an en
gineer at the Panama canal, a wire
less operator in the Philippines, u
lineman in Alaska, or an aviator fly
ing in the clouds. Whenever possible
the government gives you tt choico of
station. . '
In the army you can travel, learn
and earn at the samo time.
You may think army pay low. In
addition to tho $30 a month, Uncle
Sam pays for your food, clothing,
rent, light and fuel. Wtih the pres-
. ent high cost of living why not leave
I all the worries to Uncle Sam? After
' thirty years' service you can retire on
three-fourths pay plus $15.75 a
month. The army is not all work and
drilling. There are movies, libraries,
. games, dances, and music; furloughs
when conditions permit.
I IDo you admire courage, honesty,
squaro dealing, resolution and tenac
ity of purpose? You will find these
qualities' In men like Washington,
' Grant, Sherman, Roosevelt and
Pershing men ; developed in . our
army.
This training of body, mind and
I soul and these opportunities for edu
cation, travel and adventure are more
than sufficient reasons for joining.the
army, but there is another and great
er motive for donning the "Olive
Drab." Do you love your country
and would you be worthy of her?
You must bo willing to serve hor both
in war and peace.
Have you, like Nathan Hale, one
life to give for your country If so,
join the army.

A Mower You Can Keep in
Good Cutting Order
When the cutting parts of a
tnower get out of kilter mower
troubles begin poor cutting, heavy
draft and excessive wear usually result.
One of the big advantages of the
y to keep the cutting parts in good work
ing order during the life of the mower.
The next time yon aro in town take
time to come in and lei U3 show yoo
why you can get good work out of our
mower for years to come.
For instance, you don't have
to tear down the mower or send
it to a blacksmith shop to re-align the
cutter bar or re-center the knifo two
simple nut adjustments that can be
quickly and easily made right in the
fceld do the job. And the adjustments
can be made accurately and they stay
made.
Another thing the John Deere
Dain is a mighty easy mower to
operate. The powerful lift enables yoa.
to raise the bar easily in passing over
obstructions or to extreme height. A
foot lift working in conjunction with tha
hand lift makes the mower lift easily.
You never have to back up to
get a start in even the heaviest
hay. The knife starts cutting the in
stant the knife is lowered no lost
motion.
Vou win see big advantages
in the drive on this machine
it's extremely simple tho gears are so
placed that one set holds the other Set
in mesh constantly.
The John Deere Dain is tho
simplest, most powerful and best
built mower we have ever seen Wsj
know it will appeal to you.
