PROTECT THE
IT TAKES no seventh son of a seventh son to predict the
railroads of the future are to he paved highways. Be
tween Ashland and Medford todav the paved hisWav is
'the road bed for transportation of passengers and freight,
witli trucks and automobiles as the rolling stock. llns
condition exists elsewhere and is growing.
Hut the people of Jackson county paid for this Ash-land-Medford
road bed. And under' the present law the
future road beds are paid for and maintained by the owners
of motor vehicles. This is a step in the right direction, but
it doesn't go far enough.
For as members of the state highwav commission point-
l.sojed out Mondav night, the paved highwavs thus far eon-

sinicieu, are omy auapieu to a Ten-ion loau. Heavier loads
are now being transported and the pavement is breaking
down under them.
One tiling is certain, the load -in excess of ten tons
must be eliminated from highways now built to bear no
more than that tonnage if these highways are not to be de
stroyed Another thing is certain, a law which puts the
burden of road construction and maintenance more strong
ly upon the business interests chiefly benefitted, is imperative.
THE LAZY HOME GARDNER
SEED dealt ts in various places report that there is less
demand for seeds this year on the part of home gar
deners. In some states the decrease amounts to as much
as '.10 per cent.
Unless this is to be explained by tho weather, it shows
a curious and disquieting situation. With prices of food
so high, it might be supposed
er tendency than ever for the man with a garden plot to
raise li is own vegetables. There is little or no indication
of lower prices, for farmers and professional gardeners sav
they are obliged to curtail their cultivated area on account
of the labor shortage. The chief hope, then, of an easement
in food prices, seems to rest with the "the back yard
farmers."
It may be futile to say that fanners of this type, or
any other type, owe it to the community to do all they can
to boost the food supply. "Duty to the community" is
not so popular just now as it used to be. But the poten
tial gardener who neglects the opportunity will certainly
be sorrv, on his own account, before the season is over.
Xo political observers of experience, expect Hoover to
defeat Johnson in California today. But if Hoover makes
a substantial showing his friends will be satisfied and if
Johnson doesn't register a landslide, his friends won't be.

CHANGING STYLES
LAST year I bought a limousine, the latst thing in
boats, and it was painted black and green, and cost,
me many groats. "It is the very latest word in cars,"
the agent cried; "all other cars will look absurd, this
noble bus beside. The pride of ownership 'twill give,
and fill your soul with bliss, and it will last you while
you live, I wot and ween and wis." And now my hum
bril's out of style, it looks like Noah's ark, and when I'd
push her for a mile I go out after dark. For if I take it
out by day by joker's it's abused; they ask me if it is
the dray the Pilgrim Fathers used, My wife declares
she'd rather walk, and proper pride maintain than ride
with mo around a block in that ancestral wain. And
thusthe motor game is played upon the trustful chump,
whose last year's model looks decayed and ready for the
dump.. My van is just as fine as silk, so far as chugging
goes; but people of the critic ilk turn up the scornful
nose; its hood is badly out of date, the windshield slant
is vile, the body lines, which should be straight, bulge
out in ancient style. And so 1 '11 have to buy a gig that 's
up-to-date and new; and in six months, I'll bet a fig,
't will be a has been too.
