MEAGRE returns from Nebraska indicate tho expect
ed. After the .Michigan landslide fur Johnson, po
litical observers generally conceded the state to the Cali
fornia senator. In addition to an even stronger pro-German
element than there is in Michigan, Nebraska is largely
a farming state, and Johnson's campaign against AVood, oi:
the ground of militarism and excessive expenditures, was
certain to find a fertile field. As the returns from the
country districts come in, the Johnson lead will undoubted
ly be increased, and it is probable Pershing will gain oi'v
his military rival, under the force of the favorite son senti
ment. In the Oregonian the other day, Mark Sullivan, former'
editor of Colliers, a personal friend of General Wood ,:uid
a discerning political observer, admitted the general's
stock had reached the peak, and was visibly declining. II
compared the general's chances of securing the republican
nomination to the chances of the Germans capturing Paris.
It had to be done quickly, if it were to be done at all. lfc
concluded that if General "Wood failed to secure the nomi
nation on the first ballot, and lift didn't believe he would
have half the required number, his chances would be over,
lie looked for a realignment behind a compromise can
didate.
That is now a vcrv general impression. The polit ieians
who, of course, will control the convention, are now pre
paring for just such a contingensv, and are quietly organ
izing a machine made landslide for Senator Harding f f
Ohio. Harding is a conventional, safe and sane product
of the Mark llanna school, with nothing much against
him, and nothing for him. The wise ones figure he would
make a model President, wiselv neglecting to repeat that
a model is a small imitation of the real thing.
It is all decidedly amusing, if one has the disposition
in these disturbing times, to laugh. Not only is the old, old
game being revived again, -but it is being played in the old,
old way. The general war reaction, supplemented by far-
reaching aversion to the present aummistrat ion is being ae
pended upon to carry the republican party into power, re
gardless of the nominee as long as he is sufficiently nega
tive. Naturally, the politicians prelcr a man wlio will play
their iranie to a man who won t.
But the wise ones, the political veterans ot the peren
nial battle or bunk, have been mistaken belorc and there
is a chance they will find themselves mistaken again. At
any rate a great deaf may happen between now and the
time the curtain goes up on the carefully rehearsed per
formance in June.
Even the weather man can't resist the general tempta
tion to make t rouble. Here conies the third destructive cy
clone since February.
Senator Hitchcock is leading now, but that doesn't
prove W.' J. B. won't be drinking a bumper of grape juice
before it is over.
It is amazing how many of the old time political proph
ets forget that the women have votes.

LEAN AND FAT.
TUN LEAN MAN, when he'd gain in weight, will
find the process quite a treat; lie is indeed a lucky
skate, for all the good tilings he may cat. His bill of
fare may be a scream, no tempting grub must he eschew,
and he may flood his works with cream, and eat mince
pies and doughnuts too. Put when a fat man is inclined
to lose a ton or so of lard, the process is a dreary grind,
the sledding is extremely hard. For him the busy
housewife bakes a sickly loaf of sawdust bread; for him
there are no luscious cakes, but he must cat bran mash
instead, if he would take a midday snooze, he hears
the learned physician say, "He active, if your grease
youM lose, and walk four hundred miles a day. Your
fat increases while you sleep, it gains when you arc
sitting down; go forth, go forth and walk a heap, and
circumnavigate the town." The fat man starves and
toils and grunts, and when he goes down town to weigh,
anil note the results of all his stunts, he finds he's gain
ed eight pounds a day. Then he goes back to living well
consuming pics and pork and beef, and all the neighbors
laugh ami yell, and make his life a long-drawn grief.
