T UCK was the original politician! When he exclaims
A "Lord! "What fools these mortals be!'' he established
the human philosophy which has been followed by prof cs
sional politicians ever since. ,,. -. ... j, , , ...
Observe the tactics of Senator Johnson in California;
In a desperate effort to kill off the growing Hoover senti
ment in that state, the Johnson publicity committee is
sending out bulletins by the wholesale announcing that
vote for Hoover .'means a vote for Wood. Acting upon this
fallacious assumption, General Wood' is painted as a blood
drinking militarist, supported oy a clique of. Wall btreet
pirates and Mexican Oil barons, engaged in a conspirac
to enslave the poor working man, and drive the American
youth in battle upon the scorching sands of Mexico. The
only escape for the poor people of California is to vote
solidly tor Hiram, and put Air. Hoover in the discard, Joi
good and an. . , . ;
Of "course, no thinking person believes Joi1. a moment
that a vote for Hoover is a vote for Wood. General W ood
is not entered in the California, primary, and the contest
is a clear-cut one, between Hoover. and Johnson, between
a business man, and a machine politician, between an ad
vocate ot the League ot .Nations and one of its most unre
lenting and most bitter opponents. ,
A vote tor Hoover, therefore is obviously a vote against
Johnson, and a vote lor Johnson is aoviously a vote again!
Hoover. jSJthing could be simpler and nothing less sus
ceptible of contradiction. But to a politician of the John
son', type, clever, sclt-centered, unscrupulous, .nothing , is
clearer than the wisdom ot playuig upon Wood prejudice
and corraliug all republicans who do not favor the genert-.l
into the Johnson camp. ' ; , ', ; . ., , , ,,
It would take a sanguine arid credulous prophet who
would declare that the Johnson propoganda will not lose
Hoover votes. The game, has worked too otten to justify
commence oi its ialure this time, When it comes to ma
chine politics, no veteran of the old Tweed ring ever con
trolled a more perfectly developed machine than Senator
Johnson controls in California, As a campaigned , ho j8
without a peer, and as an inciter ot blind prejudices he is
past master. ,
But there arc indications that the people of California,
as well as the people of the country at large, are a bit fed
up on the time honored political guff, that has been passed
about every presidential election these many years, There
are also indications that jthe grinding of the gears in the
Johnson machine have at last got upon tho nerves of a
good many people the other side ot the biskiyous. ,
. Only the election can tell. But that election will bo a
genuine test of the discernment of (tho, California electo
rate, and of the validity of ihe politicians cherished creed,
that a majority of the people are fools. : '
. The members of the new Chamber of Commerce have
selected an admirable board of directors, all representative
men of ability, public spirit and vision. Under their di
rection, with the resources now available , the chamber
should be of conspicuous service, to this community and to
every district in Southern Oregon. . V ;

BORN THAT WAY
SOME folks are born with spirits sour, their nature
is to whine; the planets, atheir natal hour, were
badly out of line. They came complaining to the earth,
and squawk through all their days, and they can see no
sense in mirth, they frown oh joyous jays. They choose
tho grimmest sort of creed that's filled with tin-eats of
pain; for there is naught will fit their 'need,, that's pleas
ant, kind or sane, , .They , are the sad and gloomy, freaks
who groan with every breath, who see the bloom on
maiden checks and talk of worms and death. In vain
tho optimist may try to cheer up gents like these;
they'll answer with a dismal sigh his gladdest, brightest
wheeze. They '11 say his logic, blithe and brave, is
merely sounding brass; they'll drool a while about the
grave, and claim all flesh is. grass. They make mo
weary and distraught when I with them commune; by
them December chill is brought into the midst of ji.me.
And, oh, I pity such poor guys, who cannot gayly laugh,
who wipe the briny from their eves, and quote an cpi-
