'VERY business man knows iliat the expense of con
ducting business lias increased ti'inciiMoiisl v the las!
lew years. Therefore, every business man knows that the
expense of conducting the educational institutions of the
.state has increased correspondingly.
In other words if the state institutions of learning are
to he as good in the future as they have in the past, they
must have more money. And it they are to have, more
money, the people of Oregon must give it to them.
It seems superfluous to dwell upon tin; practical value
of these institutions. The value of O. A. ('. is known to
eV'-ry farmer in southern Oregon, the university at Eu
gene is an institution of which everv resident of the state
is justly proud. The State Norma! school produces teach
ers, and the state; s need lor more and better teachers has
never been greater than it is now.

isn't as much as you would have to pay for a box of candy

BOOSTING- AS THEY KNOCK
SENATOR (IRONNA says the farmers of North Dakota
will never forgive Hoover for a loss of $2,000,000 in
wheat. Perhaps not. Rut the people will. Eor the people
know that a fixed price for wheat saved them $100,000,000
and helped win the war.
Senator Reed declares the American people; will never
forgive Hoover for having a residence; in London and sit
ting down to dinner with Lorel (frey anel the; Duke of
Me'tdowbrrmk, eir was it Buckingham? J hit Ihe Ameri
can people, will. Pen- they know that, thanks to that; resi
dence in London, hundreds of strandetl American citizens
were allowed to ge;t safely home', and they also knew that
as a result of that dinner, two or three; million Belgian chil
dren we-re saved from starvation.
No, gentlemen, that setrt of bunk won't work. You can
fool some; of the: people' some of the time, but .you e'itu't feol
a majority of the; pee)ple this time. The- American people
know pretty well what seirt eif a man Hoover is, what he
stands for and what he; did. They know what he promises
now, and they know that he is short on words but power
ful long on action. ' They know that. Americanism is not a
mailer of latitude but ed' temper and the spirit ef service.
The campaign is veiling yet. Several jugs eif aqua pure
will go over the dam be'l'eire: it is over. Rut here anel nov,
we1 make this preeliction. Refore it is over Hoover will be
grateful for his frienels, but; he will be; einly slightly less
graje'ful for his enemies. Eor to the average; person noth
ing boosts the; lleieiver stock higher, than the type of men
wliei oppeise him anel the sort eif things (he-y say against him.
THE ONLY NEED
Til K Heieiver campaign needs no million dollar slush fund
Tor propaganda purposes. It nee-els no spouting spell
hinders to whip an indifferent electorate intei artificial en
thusiasm. The Hoeiver re:eord is kntiwn, the enthusiasm
exists: all that is ne'eded is to make; (his sentiment artie;u
late. So it is up to every lleieiver man anel wennan to make'
himself and herself kneiwn anel felt. Thc.machine politic
ians in eeintrol are' not afraid to elisre'garel Hoover, but, they
are afraid to disregarel several million petiple. The; job
between now and cenivciit ion time is for the; Heieiver sup
porters to gather from near ami far, anel show the higher
ups just, how they feel.

HOLLAND'S STAND
DAMK HOLLAND says (I rather like her, aelmie
her nerve and elauulli'ss will) : "I wem't give tii
that famous piker whose niaielen name was Kaiser Rill.
It's no use miring rounel and pawing, yemr bluffs anel
jileas will cut no ice; we- neeel the ceirelweioel he' is sawing
since coal is scam; anel high in price. He pile's up ricks
of beech anel maple', he drags huge sawlogs from afar;
lie whacks up elm, which is a staple, wherever hearths
and ranges are. In vain yeiur talk, O special pleaelers,
va vain your redests anel your roars; yem'el like' tei have
Ri'l hew your ecdars anel split your lorelly sycanieucs."
Old Rill has laid aside his sabre to saw up logs, thai
nols may boil; anel in these elays of high priccel labor he
asks no money lor his toil. In hone'st sweat his effort
sleeps him, saitl sweat is streaming from his brow; no
vtinder, then, that Holland keeps him, and says she'el
rather lose' a cow.
