ANTI-BRITISH PROPAGANDA.
BERNHARDT iimlicfs a war between England and
the United States. Heir Krzberger .seconds the mo
tion. As prophets these two gentlemen are pretty thor
oughly discredited, but no one can deny there is a persis
tent propoganda being conducted in this country to break
the bonds of sympathy bet ween John Hull and Uncle Sam.
The Hearst papers tire leading the procession. AVil-
helni Randolph in a double column leaders is twisting the
lion's tail in every issue. The Congressional Record is full
of appeals to anti-British prejudice and the poison has
been pretty thoroughly distributed by certain political
campaigners, it begins to look as though pro-British would
soon be almost as fashionable a term of reproach, as pro
German was such a short time ago. '
And judging by a recent article in the Literary Digest
the discreditable performance is not common to the Unit
ed .States. A certain M. 1 known as Horatio Bottomlev
is doing the I Tearst si unt wit h reverse Knglish in the Brit
ish Isles. Kvery week he plucks out a handful of tail feath
ers from the Yankee Kaglc and pressing them in a sheet en
titled "John Bull," distributes the same to over a million
subscribers.
So serious has the situation become that Sir Auckland
Cioddes, the new British ambassador recently took occas
sion to officially condemn the practice, and urged his coun
trymen and American friends to stop such foolishness and
return to a basis of reason and amity again.
Our own opinion is there is about as much probability
o.f England and America going to war, as William Jennings
Jryaii going to a four per cent beer party. And before Sit
Auckland recommends the Hearst; papers be again exclud
ed from Canada, won't someone inform him that the over
ture is being played to that quadrennial American farce
known as a regular presidential election.
German-Americans have voles, (piite a few of them.
And so have Irish-Americans. It's a time-honored politi
cal custom to plav for votes on overv string of the human
harp, but particularly on t he string of prejudice. That's
all there is to this ;ja,z war dance that vm Beruhardi is
taking so seriously. The madness will pass quietly away
next November, along with the marching clubs and the
campaign buttons.

WEIGHT REDUCTION.
I'M t rying to reduce my weight, I'm eating many
things 1 hate, attempting to grow thin; by following
the diet; game 1 hope to shrink my ample frame, and
lose my double chin. I Ye cut out bread, and butter too,
and all things sweet, and liquid glue, and milk and clot ted
cream; and while 1 hope to lose a ton, the stunt
J 'in doing is no fun, existence is a scream. Oh, others
seek the groaning board, and whac k oft victuals wit h a
sword, and eat; whato'crlbey please; and they may fill
themselves with jam, indulge in gravy, pie and ham,
and forty kinds of cheese. And I alone must sadly
browse on fodder that was meant for cows, and shun
the tempting things; the dinner bell for me no more
bring tidings of good grub in store, it jars me when it
rings. The dweller in the crowded flat, the artisan, the
plutocrat, may eat what e'er they wish; but I must; boil
a mess of straw, or feed on germ proof prunes and slaw,
and cheap denatured fish. And while Ihe mash of bran
is mixed, my eyes are on my waistline fixed, and fixed
thereon in vain; I do not lose a single pound, I starve
