THE WEATHER.
THE WEATHER is always a fruitful topic f you meci
Bill Jones on the street and don't know what else to
say, it is always safe to remark that it's a fine day.
bother it's fine or not makes little differcnee. Bill likt
to have the weather called to his attention.
The reason goes deep into the elemental basis of hu
man lite. Ihv scientists assure us that- the weather hits far
more, influence over civilization than politics. Politcs
merelv express national character, the weather creates it.
The hardihood :md resource
was not a product of the town meeting, but a product of
the cnniate. J. lie speedy liree.incss or the west was not pro
dticed by the invenfor of the initiative mid referendum, but
bv the weather man. '
Talking about the weather
ft.tr, ,-.,,..,:.,. i.,...,., :
Linn iLioiiiiiiK iiurauM: inert' i.mi I ililicil flMf 10 raiK aoiut.
The political catnjjain is over. (Jencral Vood has been
nominated and elected. We tire assured of. that from his
manager, and political talk from now until November is
going to be a waste of time. It usually is. But frequently
one is not aware of the fact until after election.
Moreover, the subject is timely because there is so
much weather just now in the south and middlewest. All
the telegraph wires not down are full of it. Tornadoes have
destroyed scores of lives and millions of dollars worth of
property. The truth of the assertion that climate has a
determining force on human life is this morning tragically
emphasized. . '
So at such a time, sympathy for the sufferers to the
east, can but, be tempered by grat itude to the weather man
for what lie is doing for the west. And it seems only fair
not to keep this good fortune secret. There are thousands
of men and women east of the Mississippi, who would like
to move to a tornadoless, blizzard less, below-zeroless land
if they knew where to find it.
Here it is. Therefore, one of the more important jobs
of the renewed Chamber of 'ommerce should be. the stimu
lation of conversation about, the weather. We repeat it
proceeds from a deep human instinct, and the present win
ter will enormously stimulate it. Let the conversation be
fed with facts.
A climatic survey of (lie logue Uiver Vallev properlv
and promptly distributed, would be a genuine' benefit to
all concerned. Let, the weather talk that goes to waste; be
harnessed to tho driving wheel of our constructi ve development.
The casualty lists ft om Germany recently have for some
reason failed to arouse much local appreidiension.
To hear some of the knockers talk, any man who strikes
oil should be arrested for assault and battery.

BACK TO
y V' WONT get back to normal ways until we've.
had' some rainy days. So, long as roubles grow
on trees, and greenbacks wave in every breeze, we'll
hit high places and repeat, and scorch' the length of
.Easy street. We can't be prudent while the rest are
blowing money galley west. It's epidemic, like the flu,
this gorgeous spendthrift howdydo. Some day ;i panic,
large-ami pale, with four white feet and braided tail,
will, land upon us while we spend, and to our orgy put:
an end. Then you will see men out of jobs, and you
will hear the housewife's sobs; and you will mark 'the
loan sharks thrive, while others scarce can keep alive.
Then we'll quit blowing useful coin for eauvasback ami
tenderloin, and thank our gods if we've the price of
wholesale liver off the ice. And we'll cut out the siik
attire, the princely tips, the chauffeur's hire, and all
the costly pomp and vain, anil demonstrate that, we arc
sane. Then every sad and chastened gent will ponder
ere he spends a cent, and figure for a wcarv time befoie
he cuts loose from it dime.
