STRIKE OIL SHALE
I
A visit to Trlgonla oil well No. 1
this morning by a party of Medford
people proved very Interesting in
deed. They witnessed the balling out
process, now at a depth of 75 feet.
The drill is going thru a formation
of asphaltum shale, there is crude
asphaltum oil showing plainly in the
drillings of which samples were se
cured. A trip to the well Is very in
teresting. Everyone should make it
and see for themselves.
The company will inform the pub
lic thru the press when the time is set
for the photos to be taken. They are
waiting for a clear day.

The following statement Is made
by Walter Lincoln Tooze, Sr., of
Salem, who is in tbe city organizing
Leonard Wood clubs:
We support Leonard Wood for the
presidency because his record In
Cuba as governor general and In the
Philippines prove him to be one of
the moBt masterly and successful ei
ecutlves of modern times. As gover
nor general of Cuba, he found a
country disrupted, disorganized and
seething with the curse of yellow
fever, with not a public school on the
island. L'nder the power of his ag
gressive, ceaseless and untiring lea
dership, the scourge of yellow fever
was eradicated not only from Cuba,
but from the entire world.
A stable government was firmly
established and when his work was
finished he left behind him one of
the most sanitary and best governed
republics on the western hemisphere.
Moreover, 275.000 children were at
tending the public schools of Cuba
He was almost Immediately called
for a like duty in the Moro province
of the Philippines, where for 400
years Spain had fought with the na
tives td establish at leust a semi-civil
Ized government and had failed. Taft
was governor general of the Philip
pines, und Leonard Wood's duty was
to eslablihh a civilized and sane gov
ernment in that country of Malay pi
rates, slave dealers, Mohammedans
and Christians, and he did it after
suffering untold privations with his
American soldiers. Cuba und Moro
lund stand as living monuments to
the WLTiderful executive and organiz
ing capacity of (leneral leonurd
Wood. To Leonard Wood and Theo
dore Itoosevelt will, thru ull tirao, be
given the credit of preaching the
mighty dootrlne of preparedness
years 1ofore the great war and to
them this nation owes a debt of grati
tude which it can never repay. Lest
we forget, Wood and his two sons
were In the late war and ever Blood
ready to do and die for our beloved
country. Wo are proud that General
Wood, who has ccme up from the
ranks, is recognized as a military
genius not only In America but the
world over. With the Bolshevists,
anarchists, communists and the I. W.
W.'s and kindred organizations run
ning rampant In this nation and
threatening the destruction of the
American government and the lower
ing of the American flag, whom do
the voters desire for president? Sure
ly not a plumber, an artist, or
school teacher, but a strong man who
has proven on the field of action that
he is u great executive and a peerless
organizer of good government. The
election of Ieonard Wood means
peace and a stable government that
will ulways function.
