MILITARY SERVICE VS H. C. L.
SOME indiviili'.als who cry loudest against the League
of NalioPH, cry loudest fur universal military serv
ice. And while they so vehemently favor universal mili
tary service, Ihey deplore tic increased cost of living.
AVe have yet to learn how these vociferators reconcile
these i"herieiitlv antagonistic issues. As universal mili
tary service promises to lie an issue in the coming cam
paign, it might he well to examine a few facts thereto ap
pertaining. In the first place, universal military sei vice will cost
close i a billion dollars a year. Wth a national debt of
nearly L'(i billions, it seems plain that the establishment of
such service can not decrease the cost of living.
Jn the second place, military experts are pretty web
agreed that universal military service is based upon the as
sumption that the I'nited States will again need an army
of four or five million men. They are also agreed that until
strategic railroads are built upon the Mexican and Ca
nadian frontiers, there is no possibility of such an army
being needed tc repel invasion. The only conclusion Iheii
is that the advocates of such an army expect American
troops to be sent again to foreign fields. Hut at the same
time we have the league opponents, united against such
an organization, because it might compel the United States
to do this very thing.
"We fail to sec any consistency or logic in such a view
point. True lite defeat of the treaty renders the question
of : large army and navy of more importance, but unless
we a1'!' mistaken, the American people as a whole, will not
accept this defeat as final. In our opinion no thinking
person can deny that where the so-called sentimental ap
peal o1' a league may fail, the common-sense, economic ap
peal must win.
The overwhelming force of economic law is sluUvn to
day in Kurope where, the statesmen are generally agreed
that, if Kurope is to endure, an organization for the niaiii
tennii (' of peaceful commerce, including Central Kurope
and the Kussian Umpire, must be established. In the same
way economic necessity will force America into a similar
agreement, for the alternative, the old-time scramble for
larger armies and larger navies simply'can't be endured.
Nothing, to us, seems more plain than a return to the
old order means the overturn of civilization.
t-
Therefore, until something more threatening to peace
in a. world prostrated by war, is presented, we believe a
vast .majority of tin; people of this country will be opposed
to its radical a militaristic departure as universal military
service. Knglaiid has renounced it, and Kngland, in spite
other fleet is far more vulnerable than America ever can
be.
This doesn't mean pacifism. II means reducing our
army and navy'i-, the lowest practical point., until a new
danger threatens or until the country is better able to
take upon itself a financial burden, of such gigantic por-nortions.

Ileved to know that there was Bomo
one in all this upside-down .town who
could lead pur children into safe and
sane paths.
Vot thi,i same young man Is one of
tho teachers "who did not work in
harmony with tho school system, or
does not have the required creden
tials, which are necessary for a teach
er of a standardized school" and he
is one of the dismissed teachers of
our schools. If a man like this, has
so won the lcve and respect and re
gard of the entire student body, that
he can accomplish what neither
school board, superintendent nor par
ents could, on the very eVe of a ser
ious crisis, then ho nneds no other
credentials. Only a man of strong,
uprlKht principles would havo used
his influence for good in a sltuatii.ii
of this kind. One of a more petty
nature would have derived some de
gree of satisfaction from the chaotic
cnnditlon which a strike would have
provoked, and would have urged the
children en, instead of restraining
them. Hut even tho this strike whs
organized in an endeavor .to show the
students' loyalty to him and other
dismissed teachers, he still holds at
heart, in spite of the treatment he
lias received, tho best Interests of the
pupils whoso confidence he has won.
ille did a good thing for this town
a big thing, and he was the, only
person who had tho influence tc do
it. We can safely trust our children
to his care, and even if he didn't
know his a b c's he has the highest
credentials a teacher can have and
without which, no teacher with all
the diplomas In the world, can ever
hope to succeed a personality that
wins confidence, a leadership, com
bined witli high principles, a thoro
understanding of youthful natures, a
mind above petty, selfish gratifica
tion.
I do net know tills teacher person
ally I never saw him before he stood
up at that meeting Saturday night,
but since then I havo been made to
feel, stronger than ever, that our
schools are hefng deprived of the best
influences they ever had and which
can never be replaced.
What do wo care If a teacher can t
work in harmony with a despotic sys
tem, if lie can promote harmony
amuig our children in an atmosphere
of seething, uproaring discontent? Is
it any wonder that tho children want
ed to strike when they stand in dan
ger of losing a friend, a hlg wise
brother and teacher liko this?
