BUI SHOULD II?
To tho Editor:
The refusal of On siu?r.n(-n(lnt

ers oud parents on u basis of com
promise and arbitration, leaves the
ivhole matter in the air reenrdin? the
final solution of our school diffienl
ties. As one who has hud four chil
dren in the school and another one
to betrin this fall. I feel materially in
tfereHted in whatever action mavbc
taken. It is fair to assume that
neither side is so much ritrlit, its po
sition could not be changed to the
advantage of the public. After all
it is the parents, children and tux-1-Hvers
who are the niot concerned.

bur.-t of indignation on the iart of
the parents and pupils, is an indica
tion of what we may expect in the
f'llure I am most sure we do not want
it.
The facts confronting the commu
nity are these: About one-third of
our teaching force has been dis
missed. At first no reasons were
given. Later when pressure bad been
brought to bear, the suiKrintcndcnt
and school board submitted the rea
sons in each cae of dismissal. With
out doubt some of the reasons were
sufficient, but in reirard to some of
our older and most successful teach
ers, there is room for L'rave doubt.
Their good work has never been
ouestioned bv pupils or parents, their
homes are here, their salaries are
spent here for the maintenance of
themselves and the community, but
when thev applv for other positions,
thev will have to state to their pros
pective employers that thev were dis
charged from the Med ford schools,
and possibly be asked to give the rea
sons, but who, excepting1 the superin
tendent will know what the reasons
are? It has been stated in open meet
ing without contradiction that the
superintendent is a stranger in the
school rooms, having visited some of
them for only a few minutes during
the school year. Instances of this
kind lead one to the conclusion that
we have u most capable teaching

staff, and a most negligent superin
tendent. Doubtless reports have been made
regularly, but hat do reports amount
to when it U o easv to yet personal
contact. Mo-t reports ;trf meant for
pigeon holes anyvvav. It is reported
the superintendent has been working
sixteen hours a dav for davs at a
time. It is too long for any man to
work. If the svstem is work in?
rightly, he should be able to do all
he has to do with the heln "iven him
in much shorter time. A little por
sonal c-mta'-t with the teachers and
pnnil-j in the class r"om would pot
siblv relieve the office strain, and
accomplish more for the good of nil.
Since the teachers dismissal the
Parent -Teachers association have
been trvinf to iet nt tbp sent of onr
educational troubles. .Thev asked for
the meeting with the hoard, so thev
could cet, some open expression of
their differences. At this meetin? in
the high school building a petition
that was hastily and unwisely drawn
was presented. The teachers and
parents knew notbincr about it he-
fore actual presentation at the meet
ing. Had thev known it was to be.
presented thev would have used their
influence to prevent it. The petition
Presented, and the personalit's in
dulged in at that time were untiinolv.
The superintendent was right in re
fusing to resien under such high
handed methods. It was an unfor
tunate instance and marked onlv the
strong feelings rminin" in the henrt.s
of the parents and nuoils at that time.
The hoard and community ought to
dismiss that unfortunate nicetine
with Prejudice to neither side.

posed a non-partisan board of arbi

resentative of all-interests concerned.
The hoard, np to this time, have re
fused to arbitrate. Their position
must be extremely strong or else ex
tremely weak. The public, as in most
instances of deadlock, can be damned.
The position of the superintendent
and board is within the law. No dis
pute there. The superintendent can
stand on his contract and the school
board on its election, the puhltn can
hey und plead. Shvlock stood on
his bond much in the same way. H
had a right to his pound of Christian
flesh, and the superintendent has a
right to his salary and the board
have a right to see he gets it. Shv
lock had no right to a single drop of
Christian blood, and in the shedding
of the same he forfeited his bond. If

This Miller feat of producing Uniform Tires Is

must be trained to build alike.
