That Marine didn't just happen
to be the husky lad he is. He is
merely a .walking example of
,. what the Marine Corps can do for
the ordinarily healthy man. May
te.when he came Into the service
1 he .was 'a . little stoop shouldered,

, r .yrh;Martne Corps Is a body of
' ,'inen,' carefully trained to use both
hands, :both-feet -and their heads.
Thy are the sort of men who can
J ' 'take VeraCruz or form a guard of
honor for the Prince of Wales, and
. do.bothJobs shipshape. They are
1 blood brothers to the French Por
" elgn ' Legion, the Pennsylvania
; , 6tate: Constabulary, the Canadian
. Mounted Police and the Texas
r. Bangers. They are princes of good
fellows, and they're wildcats when
they're riled.
No man does his beat work un
less he likes his Job. And no man
can do good work wlthoufplenty
of recreation. It Is upon these
two principles that Marine Corps
training is based.
The Marine must be something
of" a sailor and everything of a sol
dier. So he is always learning
something new and intensely in
teresting. In addition to taking
on quite a bit of seamanship, he
leufns to hike like an infantryman,
ride like a cavalryman and handle
guns like an artilleryman. He
knows something of wireless
telegraphy and mechanics.
In fact, when he comes out of
the Marine Corps there are all
sorts of bifr-payiug ; civilian jobs
that are waiting for a man who
can do so many different kinds of
things and do them well.-' '
To keep a man fit there Is noth
ing like athletic sports, and all
Marines are encouraged to go in
for boxing, football, baseball ar.d
swimming. Competent coaches and
trainers are provided and every fa
cility for a man to indulge in the
form of sport that most appeals to
him. M
Good Fellowship of the Corps
A life of travel, adventure and
outdoor work would naturany at
tract the man who has the mak
ings of a "good fellow" in him.
And nowhere do you find mora
"good fellows" than in the Marine
Corps. If ever you have seen a
bunch of Marines in their off
hours In barracks, or out for a
time In any of our large cities, or
sightseeing in foreign ports, there
is no need to tell you anything
about that side of a Marine's exist
ence. - - i
And an for his chances of seeing
the world there is hardly a coun
try on tath whore Marines are
not stationed at present. -They are
In' Haiti and the Philippines. They
are in London. Paris and in China.
No big warship sets sail for for

Wlio Makes the Tractor?
KEEN RIVALRY IS
Thfore. vou buv anv tractor vou ought to know sonic

country is full of "orphan" tractors. For lack of capital
or for-some other reason the makers of these "orphan'"
tractors have quit the field and their owners are unable to
get -service and are left to shift as they may. .
It you, are wise you will buy a tractor made by some
well-known and solidly established company that will
Btand tack of your machine as long as it lasts.
We will be glad to have you investigate the standing,
reliability and scope of the Cleveland Tractor Company,

Keen rivalry c'f a most friendly and
commendable nature between divis
ions, team captains and members that
are to take an active part tn tho en
rollment ot 400 now members for the
Chamber of Commerce during the en
suing week has already sprung up
even before the opening guns of the
campaign have been fired.
Ten teams of men and one team of
women are now impatiently awaiting
the "zero hour," when at tho sound
of the -whlstle-tho signal will bo pass
ed all the way along the lino for tho
loyal and patriotic field army to go
over the (top in the four-day buttle
against civic drones and non-progres
sives.
Dally meetings are being held by
captains with members of their teams
and they are all bent on making the
best showing possible in tho big drive
for members. Naturally, one team Is
to, enjoy the distinction of uoing the
banner team of tho campaign, and
each and every one of the lot In aspir
ing w that honor. Some of the team
captains have addressed personal
communications to the members of
their respective teams, and from the
tenor of these letters it is very evi
dent that energy, activity and the
real old "pep" will feature conspicu
ously in the canvass that is to bo
made of the city, for new members.
Following are copies of letters
written by four of tho different cap
tains to their men, rallying them lb
the colors and preparing them for the
big work that lies just ahead, and
from which It is easily surmised there
will be real competition:
Do you remember the old story
they tell about tile big battle with
the Indians fought out on Table
Hock? 'Great story and some scrap
wasn't It. Well, that battle compared
with what is going tu come off here
next week won't resemble by compar
ison anything more than a school
kids' shlnney game. We're going to
wage war on tho mossba'cks und the
non-progressives.
Let's see if we can't make the best
showing of any of the teams whon we
hit tho line next week. What do you
say? Yours tor a Greater Medford,
FRANK KARHKLL,
Captain Team So. 1.
There are ten teams of loyal Jlcd-
ford citizens signed up for tho Cham
ber of Commerce membership drive
next week. You and I are on one of
those teams. Wo are now In the
trenches awaiting the zero hour.
When the whistle sounds we'll enter
tho battle and do our part. So will
all the other teams. Hut let's see if
we can't make our team the banner
organization of the entire bunch, and
bring home the best results.
Vours for a Greater Jlcdford,
E. M. McKKAINY. .
Captain Team, No. 3.
I don't know what sort ofa district
our toani is going to, draw in the
Chamber of 'Commerce membership
drive next week, but regardless of
where it may be located, let's Jump In
and see if we can't muko it tho host
showing of the different teams.
The eyes of Medford are upon us,
so let's do this job up good and
brown. All together, let's go!
Yours for a Greater Medford,
JOHN GOODRICH,
Captain Team No. C.
Our team In the Chamber of Com
merce membership drive is going to
bat as a plnch-hlttcr next week, and
we must see to It that we deliver
nothing short c'f a "homer."
With men like yourself, and the
others on our team, there Is no reason
why we shouldn't be up with the top
notchers when the final reports of re
sults are hung up.
Yours for a Greater Medford,
RAWL.ES MOORE.
