ASHLAND, Mar. 19. With the re
leasing by the Masonic ledge of pres
ent postoffice quarters to the govern
ment, it follow.8 that a considerable
lot of new equipment will be instal
led. The lease is supposed to run for
ten years from March 1, 1920. Not
only new equipment will be added
but there will be marked changes in
the lobby and office, the former to be
aornewhat enlarged, thus necessitat
ing changes in the entrance, which
will be from the north Bide of the
present doorway instead of in the
center as at present, inasmuch as the
office will be enlarged to an extent
which will encroach upon tbo en
trance aa now located. Among c
number of additions, the new equip
ment extract implies the Installation
of general delivery letter and general
delivery paper cases, the former con
talning SO, and the latter 3t; divis
ions; also a combination letter and
paper case, wiro back, containing HO
divisions; a spacious safe; a cash and
stamp cabinet; also rural farriers'
desk, a standing desk of ample pro
portions, and a rovolving top desk
All these, together with wardrc'he
nnd other general furnishings, will
make the offico equipment in keep
ing with requirement! and up-to-date
service.
There- havo recently been many
changes in the personnel of tho office
force, with a few new additions and
the shifting of some others as to their
departmental work, all tho parties
involved being ex-service men. El
bert Karlow Is now ono of tbo carriers
and Hubert Hentley a regular elerk.
Lieut. Don Spencer has been trans
ferred from the carrier service to a
clerkship. Nominally assistant post
master for sometime past, Capt. Mil
lard Crubb has recently had his posi
tion as such officially confirmed by
the government. In length of servico
as clerk, Miss Lydia McCall leads the
force. AV. IC. Moo'r is the "pioneer"
carrier within city limits, while J. 11.
Doran still travels the pathways of
tho rural districts, rain or till 1 no, both
In and out of season. Charley Hur-
gadine, tho old reliable Hupcrinten-i
dent of transportation of malls be
tween tho postoffice and depot, is
still on tho Job night and day, his
status however being more of a rail
road employe than that of tho post
office dopartmeut.
Not only are new furnishings being
added to the office, but in a general
way all the equipment heretofore on
hand is to bo overhauled, seme to be
eliminated, while the residue- is to be
repaired and readjusted along lines
which suggest "the survival of tho
fittest."
