The latest development in eonnee
tion with the expansion and reoran
liizalion eiinipniirn of the Chamber
of Commerce and one which primuses
to develop into a potent and power
ful factor in insuring the success
of the new movement, is the an
nouncement that the mothers, daugh
ters and sisters will line up with the
fathers, sons ami brothers of .Med
i'ord in the drive for -MO members and

history of the yreal world war,",said
one of the eampiiiuu officials, "will
be that which tells of the noble sac

niHchmenl of the hated I Inn, when
they saw through horror-stricken eves
the wealicninL'. wnverimr line of their
army of men. And the women of the
entire world, through this heoric ex
ample set hv their sisters of liussia,
were awakened, as never before, to

WJth plumhers and mechanics

tho modern workingman doing
with his new-found wealth? la
ho going In for tho opera, speed
boats and musical comedies, or
does ho Bt ill find enjoyment lri hia
old, familiar interests and amuse
ments? In an effort to find out, one
thousand men were asked recently
what was their favorite "social"

union, the church, library, lodgo
or what? To get at tho answer
easily sixteen of thfso institutions
were selected and listed, and tho
replies woro set down in the form
of a vote.
And what was tho answer? It
was found that tho labor-union
tho machine which raises wages
and makes haughty employers atep
lively was a moro or less univer
sal favorite. In many rases, how
over, tho movies ran the unions
n closo second, especially since the
household purse or check book
permitted tho whole family to go
to (he show.
That the day of tho old-timo
"Joiner" had far from passed was
nlrto abundantly proved, for tho
lodge lure loomed large In the bal
lots. Hundreds assorted man's In

his soc.ret society mooting. There
cropped up, too, a surpritdnRly
largo st'idious element. Many ad
mitted that their favorite form of
amusement was provided by tho
nearest public library. There was
evi'ii a scattering f if aesthetes who
liked pictures and sculpture, and
were attracted enough by art gal
lerb'H to make frequent visits.
When the hundreds of answers
to the sixlfcn suggestions h:id nil
been received and classified, it was
found In , the survey that tho In

all phases of tho survey that the

Tho Tahor union, the lodge
even the movies provided a good
enough medium for the working

did not take much questioning,
moreover, to show that tho agitator
of social unrest, who has hia
strongest hold in tho city, also
was becoming a powerful attrac

From the survey, the Inter

the conclusion, right or wrong,
that any organization which
wishes to interest tho worker must
be as prnctical as a labor union,
as interesting as a movto and as
stimulating as a debating forum.
