American business men, interested in the national wel
fare instead of political advantage, bad been given the
peace treaty, 1 hey would have ratified it in two weeks.
"Why Because they would have realized that the im
perative need was a return of this country and the world
to the work of reconstruction.
They would also have realized that with a few common
sense interpretations 1 lie country would stand to benefit
in nigral and commercial leadership far more by immediate
ratification than it would stand to lose, by any possible
infringement upon essential American rights, by countries
to whom .American friendship would-be vital.
Instead of one man .saying, the promulgator of this
treaty does not belong to my party, therefore I must pick
I laws in it, anil another man saving, tins is a partv meas
ure, so I must close my eyes to its imperfections, the publh
spirited business man, with interest 111 nothing but Ameri
can welfare, would have said, the treaty isn't perfect, the
league isn't, ideal, but the important Uiing is to get back
to work and the ways ol peace, and the best way to reined
and strengthen this document is to put it in operation.
