THE OVERWIIHL.MING vidory ol' Mii.jor iruh Cald
well over labor leader Duncan in Seattle is sympto
matic of the times.
As (iciicral I Vrshiiifj said on his return from a swin.n
around the circle, there is nothing more striking than the
ititen.se spirit of a militant Americanism throughout the
land, hat red for Ihe red i'la and love for the flag of
America.
Duncan represented the red flag, Caldwell the fluff of
America and the flag of America won by the largest major
ity ever given a mayor in t he I'uget Sound metropolis. For
this result all Irue Americans have reason to rejoice.
Of course, tjiere will be various interpretations of the
result, depending largely upon the interpreters opinions
and prejudices. l!ig business, .supported by the political
profiteers will be inclined to see in this result an open
season for laboriles and liberals. The old guard will lie
sorely tempted to -turn back the calendar to the golden
days of Mark II. tuna and Dick Crocker.
lint the vole in Seattle was not against liberalism, it
wits not against labor, it was against the spirit of radical
ism, disloyalty and direct action philosophy which the
labor candidate represented.
Duncan did not represent American ftibor, he represent
ed U!!-A merican liolshevism, lie did not represent the poli
cies of men like .John .Mitchell and Sam (Jompcrs, lie rep
resented the policies of the Derkmans and Mergers. Jn
fact, when (ionipers was working night to day to win the
war, and unite labor tit: home and abroad for an allied vic
tory, Duncan, was opposing the selective draft and collect
ing defense money for Tom Moot icy.
Because of the destructive, arrogant un-American
leadership of men like Duncan, labor is now suffering, and
will suffer until this clement is effectively' expelled from
councils of the labor organization. The prejudice such
men have created, will not be overcome in a day, and it's
great danger is a spasm of excesses in t he ot her direction.
I'.ut while I'ncle Sam is prone to emotional extremes,
he never indulges in them for long. Congenitally liberal,
and fundamentally sensitive, to the rights of tho average
man, he can be depended upon to ultimately insist upon
giving to all, labor, capital and what not, the old-fashioned
sipiare deal.
The tremendous change in public sentiment toward big
business is shown in the comparitivc indifference to the
Supremo Court decision sanctioning tint creation of the
Steel Trust, the largest capitalistic combination in the
world. Twenty years ago -Justice Pitney would have had
to be given police protection. The people have prettv treh-
erally conic to realize t hat coinbiual ions tier se are not onlv
