Intorent on an lnvontnicnt In bunk
made In 1910, Ih now lielnK jiuiil, and
thu sailer's lino of pretty phrases
Is somewhat frazzled at tlio edisex.
IT i.'- foolish to expect h pay twice, as much for every
thing in creation, and pay no more for taxes. As the
eost of conducting private business lias none up so has the
eost of conducting public biiKines.s. The dollar is only
worth half what it used to he worth, and the result is ob
vious whether you hand over the dollar to the grocer for
tea. or the sheriff for taxes.
Nevertheless then; will he an awful howl in certain
quarters when a tax "raise is suggested. For not onlv are
death and taxes the onlv two certain things in the world.
they are t he-only two lliings universally ahhorred. Xin
men out of ten will pay t wice as much for a motor car, 01
a pair 01 siiKine socks or a nouse anci lor, witiiout a mur
mur; but let their tax sheet show a fifty percent elevation
and nothing will satisfy them short of murder.
As a matter of fact taxes represent more value receiv
ed 1 haii most any other form of outlay. The reason most
men don't see it, is the reason most men don't see the
beauty in snakes. There was a time when the .jungle
snake was man's most dangerous enemy, and there' was a
time when the tax collector was also the scalp collector
and ihe baronial hangman. Three-fourths of us belong
to tiiose past ages, mat is why Kicking snakes and taxes,
is second nature.
ror the good of the county and the stale, however, it
is To ne noped i ins elemental distaste Jor tax increases
doesn t result m 1 lie defeat of all contemplated improve
ments. The forces of reaction will naturally take ad
vantage of the inevitable raise in taxes to shout down
every progressive and constructive measure advocated
Hut it the majority will only think things over, they will
see that a certain raise in the tax levy is as much to be ex
pected as the raise in the price of bread and butter.

Mgmm,
'HE BANE of old age is constipation. The bow-
X els become weak and unablu to perform their
functions without aid. For this purpose only
the mildest and gentlest laxative should be used
The use of harsh cathartics aggravates the trouble
and makes the constipation worse. Chamberlain's
Tablets are a favorite with people of middle age
and older on account of their gentle action.
