PARTISANSHIP
WE liafc often wondered, diiriii'.' The pa:.t six. months,
what is really hc-hind polit i'-al partisanship.
What human trait is it, that amuses itht rwise fair minded
and kind hearted men to such mali'-ions and pitiless
extremes.
Take the ease of I 'resident Wilson fur example. The
president lias lieen for several months a very siek man.
lieyardless of whether one approves either of the man or
his policies, it would seem that under the eireiimslatiees a
eeriain human sympathy mL'lit creep into even intensely
antagonist ie political relations, as tliontrh his most hitter
opponents ini'lit show some slight compassion and while
not deviat in. if in t he slightest from opposit ion he wiliinir to
ahandon, for the time, some of the vicious tricks of Un
political name which under ihe circumstances stem, to
border on poor sportsmanship.
lint there has been no indication of the slightest de
viation in 1't-tdii iir ir ehanife ill tactics toward the presi
dent since his collapse and perhaps the president is the
last man in the world to ask that there should be.
.Nevertheless the inhumanity, the unnatural an.l need
less brufalit v oft he whole business, has wc believe im
pressed thousands of peoples of both partic.
because of temperament or environment
taken an active part in the partisan anie, ;
spoixl to its react ions.
In conversation the other (lav with a i;o.
friend of ours.- a line citizen and -food sort in every way
-we were amazed to find the intensity of hatred which
even the name of tiie president inspired, and he proceeded
to say Ihinifs, -iiersonal. Ko-sipy, .foolish, silly things.
which lit1 sincerely believed and which to us seemed
worthy of contempt from the serious historian, or a lauifh
from the sane, fair-minded man of affairs.
And what we asked, had twisted (hat man's head.' lb
was lalkiiiLf about I'resideiil Wilson, precisely as others
used to talk about I'resideiil Roosevelt. and of course
time would cure and mortify him in one case as it did then
in the other, and yet he was undoubtedly rel'leciiu what
hundreds of thousands of intense partisans like himself
felt, and said, and there was no help for him at least until
al'ler elect ion.
Of course its part isanship, the competitive passion
ovc rwheliuiiiif t he judgment. but what is partisanship.'
We asked a w ise person this (ileslion recent I v anil he
replied " I 'art isanship ! 1 hat 's merely the pack instinct of
the juimle, applied to a civilization in which it has no or-c-anic
place."
Sounds rather hiifh brow, but the more we considered
it, the more it seemed to explain the situation.
