Striking features of the F.lks'

One of the cither r,'S.Ws, Jre5
Dailev. who was married durmu the
holidoTs, was afraid to appear at
the. mectinir, and Viriril Striwie. an
other newlv wed nieniber. is not vet
back from his honeymoon. The
lodtre will consider their enses later.
Mr. Ilennett promised to donate an
other barrel of eider at the eondu
sion of another thirty years' resi
denco here. ,
It was inst DO years neo last Tues
lav nitlit that he and Mrs. ltennet.
arrived in Jfedford from their old
home near Keokuk, Iowa, with the
intention of tavini; here a year if
tbev liked it. Tbev have been here
ever since. Medfurd was a small vii
late then mid the site of the Kami
i-rs & Fruitgrowers bank was out in
the suburbs covered with scrub oak
nnd chapparcll. There was then Hire
inches of snow on the irround, nnd
then the developments of the next
few davs and month the newlv arriv
ed Iowans, did not fall in love with
Med ford.
The follnwintr Saturday it began to
snow and before it let up there was
17Vi inches of snow on the ground.
The weather was not so cold nt that
time as during tho recent big snow
fall, which amounted to a foot, and
if Jfr. Hennett's memory serves him
right the thermometer stood about H
degrees nbovo zero, whereas during
the recent snowfall it was about 10
degrees below.
. The majority of this great depth of
snow, although it thawed a little and
snowed a little several times remain
ed on the ground about a mouth, nnd
then when it did go nwnv rather sud
denlv caused big flood conditions,
and tho Hear ereek bridge was wash
ed away by the raging torrent.
The business part of Medl'ord was
on this side ot tho creek nnd to en
able tho fanners living in the terri
tory across tho stream to come
ncross a cable was rigged up over the
torrent. The fanners drove to the
other side in their stick carts, con
sisting of rear wheels of a wagon
attached to a wagon pole, and then
were pulled ncross in a big basket at
tached to the cable.
Duo to the flood conditions in Ore
con and California nt that time Mr.
Bennett says tho train service was
demoralized in both directions, nnd
because of washouts in the Cow creek
canon and the Sacramento valley
there was no through train service
from Janunrv 2 to February 2ti. nnd
no mail was received from the east
nnd west during that time.
In relating tho above Mr. Ilennett
recalled that the previous year had
been n very dry one nnd hence food,
grain and other priees were very high,
but that about that time he purchas
ed n dressed hog for six cents a
pound and wheat at about :ilt cents a
bushel.
