' All the ubove figures. ' both for
states and regions, it should be un
derstood apply to what is known lis
the commercial crop. That is, that
..part of the crop which is put up in
barrels, boxes, or some other form
of container, or sold in bulk where
Borne attempt is made at' g'rading be
fore the apples are put on the mar
ket for sale in the fresh slate. Jt
miiv be bientioned in this connection
that while the commercial apple crop
of the United States is 2(1.174,000
barrels as indicated, the total apple
crop, thnt is to sav, the total prncliic
, tion, which includes all waste apples
and those from home and farm or
chards, is estimated nt 147.457,000
'bushels or 40.152.000 barrels! Of
this total apple crop about 15 per
cent or 7,37.'1,000 barrels, eoes to
waste or is used on the farm: about
20 per cent or 0.830.000 barrels, or
approximately 713,000 tons, is made
into by-products, the greatest per
cent of which is cider. California,
western New York and n few other
heavy producing centers, dry enor
mous ouantities of apples. Canner
ies, vinegar factories, icily factories,
etc., also consume very large
amounts. The remaining (15 tier cent
of the total crop, or 31,040.000 bar
rels, fs used for consumption as fresh
fruit. Of these 31.040.000 barrels,
however, it is estimated that but 20,
174.000 barrels may be called com
mercial, while the remaining 5,775.
000 barrels make up part of the crop
which is not commercial, and which
finds its wnv into local consumption
from farm orchards, the fruit from
which is of inferior oualilv nnd un
graded. Smaller towns in many of
the eastern nnd middle western stale
consume u large portion of this grade
of fruit.
15 Per (V'nt. Total in lloves
The box stales this year are pro
ducing 11,821.000 bbls., r about 45
per cent of the total apple crop of
the United States. This is the larg
est bv a good many thousand barrels
crop ever produced in the box upple
states. To analyze the situation
further we find that the three north
western states, Oregon, Washington
nnd Idaho are producing 8,011.000
barrels, or' 34 per cent of the total
commercial apple crop of the United
Stales.
Thi! latest government report
shows that, (here were on December
liilli. 1010, 3,010,327 barrels, and
8,(i0i,20.i boxes in cold storage and
on (he same dale last year 3.104,050
barrels and 5.308,542 boxes in cold
slurage. .11 decrease of 03.713 bar
rels and an increase of 3,208,723
boxes. Normally January would
show an increase in storage, lint this
year so many apples have been
frozen either in transit or nt point
of origin thnt it is fair to presume
the increase, if any. will he slight.
