FIRE lil F.MBLDG
Mae Murray at the Page Theatre
Sunday Only, With Vaudeville
The business district of Medford
had a tire scare this morning and
the M. F. & H. building tenants re
gard themselves as very fortunate
hat the fire In the basement of that
big structure was discovered In time.
Had it gotten a little more headway
one of the worst fires in the history
of the city might have been the result,-
As it was the flames were eas
ily extinguished and the loss was
comparatively small.
.'. The janitor of the building who
was supposed to burn the paper and
rubbish from the M. F. & H. store
and ' offices of the various tenants
daily, -. had instead allowed it to ac
cumulate by the waste trash burner
beside the furnace. An employe of
the company started to burn some of
this trash in the burner at 7:45
o'clock this morning and left the
basement . for a short time during
which the big pile of rubbish nearby
had caught fire and was fast burning
and spreading when discovered.
Smoke poured from the basement
windows and was carried upstairs
thruout the hall ways of the several
floors. ' The flames communicated to
the heavy wood ceiling and rafters
of the basement near the furnace,
burning the cable that carried the
various electric wires that served the
building, thus demoralizing the tele
phone and electric light system of
the structure. Repairs were later
made which soon restored the ser
vice, The fire was extinguished' by the
firemen, before It had eaten Its way
thru the first floor, but the basement
ceiling , and rafters were badly
charred.
