When America entered the ' war
young Goldman believed his duty
was to fight for his adopted coun
try and he enlisted at Seattle and
went to France with the 91st divis
ion.' He went over the top twice and
escaped without a scratch; but on
November 9, two days before the
armistice was signed, a German
shell lit near him and he was blown
to atoms.
-. "But l do not regret it," said Rab
lil Ooldman. . "A man cannot die for

America he lives forever. Lincoln
died for America and his name will
go down for all time. I regret los
ing? my hoy, but I thank God he died
in fighting for the cause." -
Rabbi Goldman is a Zionist and a
firm believer in the' prophecy that
the Jews are to return to Palestine,
the promised land, and in his even
ing sermon will develop that idea in
connection with 'Biblical statements
and the war events bearing upon the
possible return ot the Jews. He Is
now on his way to Palestine and will
' loin In the homecoming of thousands
of Jews who will make the pilgrim
age to the Holy Land, recently re
deemed from the grip ot the barbar
ous Turks and Germans. .
-Rabbi Goldman Is in Medford this
week to make arrangements for his
appearance here Sunday. He is an
intensely interesting talker and is
overflowing with Information about
ill-fated Russia which he knows like
a book, and there is no doubt but
that the meeting Sunday morning as
well as the story ot the Jews In the
evening, will be tremendously inter

: A remarkable thing happened thts
morning when a guest at the Hotel
Medford from his, room talked by
long distance telephone for three
minutes with his mother In Xtow
York city. This breaks the long
distance telephone record of Med
ford, all ho five years ago an attempt
was. made to talk from the long dis
tance office here by a patron some
where In. Massachusetts, but the talk
was very . unsatisfactory. Today's
conversation, however, was all that
could be desired. The feat was made
possible by uew telephone improve
ments Inaugurated within the past
IS months.
As there Is no direct long distance
wire to New York from Portland the
connections made for today's conver
sation were first from Medford to
Portland,, then from Portland back
to San Francisco, and from that city
on the direct wire to 'New York, a
distance estimated at 4500 miles.
- And this wonderful exposition ot
the modern feats of science was
broughttabout- thru the tact that R.
J. Mandle of New York city, a travel
ing salesman, aged about 30 years,
who arrived In Medford .Monday on
business felt lonesome tor his moth
er last evening and longed to talk
with her and hear her voice. So on
retiring last night he decided to arise
at 4 a. m. and from his room talk
with the mother at her home In New
York city, getting advantage ot the
night rate:
He carried out this program.
In talking about the unusual wire
conversation later Mr. 'Mandle said
they could hear each other just as
plainly as If they were In ordinary
conversation. Another remarkable
thing In connection was the tact
learned later that this conversation
passed over, wires thru which tele
graphic messages were being sent at
the same time.
While all the above was. surpris
ing now comes the real shock. In
the mind of every reader has no
doubt run the thought, of the tre
mendous expense of talking from
Medford to New -York, but Mr. Man-
die's expense for the three minutes
conversation was only' S4.15.

KKRIBS Marv Catherine Kribs
was born in Guelph, Canada, June 20.
1849. She removed with her parents
to Illinois when two Years of nee and
obtained .her education in that state.
When about 17 she went to Wis
consin, and taueht one year there.
Mrs. . Kribs became a member of
the Congregational church , when a
voniur woman and has alwavs been
a consistent Christian. Was a mem
ber of the First Presbyterian church
of this city. .
January 1. 18G7. she was united in
marriage with Charles C. Kribs at
Trempealeau. Wis. Her husband
passed awav in April, 1916.

The first annual conoert by the
high school girls .glee club and tho
high school orchestra, hold at the
high school auditorium last night
was such a. big success that It Is sure
to be a yearly event hereafter. Tho
assembly room was packed to the
doors with a dulighted audience.
Many who could not get in enjoyed
the concert standing in the corridor.

class program was rendered by each

honor and credit on Miss Alice

Benjamin Franklin Adktus, who
died Sunday night. Dr. Adklns ciimo
to tho Rogue, River valley In 1885.
He settled in Modford when It wus
but a village.' Ho has been an Inter
ested and ardent advocate ot the city
and labored consistently tor Its ad
vancement. For some years ho was
engaged In tho hardware buslnoss
with Benjamin Wobb at the corner
of Main streot and Central avenue.
Ho was for over 20 years first vice
president of the Jackson County
bank. . Ho has not only soon Medford
grow into a city but he has boon a
strong factor in Its liphulldlng.
Dr. Adklns was a member of the
First Baptist church ot Modford
from -its early beginning. Ho was
acttvo In tho securing of subscrip
tions for the building. He helped
In tho erection of It and when it was
dedicated helped to provide for tho
deficit so It could be dedicated free
of debt. He waa for a number of
years the superintendent ot the Sun
day school and labored for tho ad
vancement of the church until Infir
mity hindered further service. Ho
was deeply rollglous by naturo. hav
ing been a roombor of tho church
since his boyhood.
Dr. Adklns was a man of wldo ex
perience and broad education.' lie
was born In Greonsbnrg, Indiana,
Jan, 10. 1841. i He graduated from
Franklin colloge In the class - with
President Stott of Franklin college
and General Morgan. Later he grad
uated from tho College ot Physicians
and Surgeons ot Indianapolis, Ind.,
and also from the Rush Medical col
lego of Chicago.
; He served hhr, country for a time
as a soldier in the 1st regiment ot
Indiana under General Durant. Thon
he became assistant surgeon , at
Camp Carrey.
After some years of successful
practice as a physician In Now Ross,
Indiana, he retired, and later came
west, residing In Medford until seven
or eight years ago when ho moved
to the present home on 'Ulvorsldo,
south of the city.-'
He died a few-minutes after 13
o'clock midnight. May 25lh, 1919.

on with tho going of Memorial Hun
day. Dr. Adklns was 78 years, four
mouths and HI days old. Ho leaves
