There seoms to be a lowdown opin

to turn out a cross between .. The

There also seems to be a diffidence
about turning the back, for fear a

Furthermore, (here are indications
that the pet idea of William Jennings
Bryan, the eminent poppycockist, to
conquer the world with love", has not
been knocked cuckoo.

THE BIG DAY
TARZAN DAY
BEST FOR THE WORLD IS BEST FOR ITALY.
THE Italian situation is still in the dark. On invitation
of the peace council, requested from Rome, Orlando
and Sonniuo arc en route to Paris. Signor d'Annunzio,
after a brief but hectic flight in the empyrean of rhetorical
flambonyance, has taken to his pearl and amber couch.
The cries of "On to Fiuine," have died down.V It looks as
though the 'emotional pyrotechnics were over, the reel
run. But who can tell? v -
As the sapient observer on our left has remarked, this
may be the collapse of tho bladder, or merely a pause for
second wind. Whatever the final outcome, one hopes this
marks the end of the temperamental debauch. Tho emo
tional and dramatic requirements of the Latin nature
would seem to have been satisfied. Let the rest be sense.
;
To' judge by tho tlalian Miserere, the possession of
Fiunie was one of tho goals of waiv Its loss was "snatch
iug the fruits of our heitiic sacrifices, descending from
the radiant crests of most glorious victory to misfortuno's
dire abyss, etc., etc." ,
. And yet in the secret treaty there was not a word re
garding ilie possession of Fiuine. fIn fact, in that agree
ment, the Adriatic, port was given to the Croat ians. Nor
is Fiuine Italian. In the city proper there are 24,000 Ital
ians to 16,000 Slavs, but the environs which are essential,
are overwhelmingly Slavic, something like 100,000 Slavs
to 30,000 Italians. , ; : : , ,
On the same plea of nationality the Italians demanded
the Dalmatian coast. Yet in this territoiy the Slavs out
number the ItaUans over ten'to one.
,;-; :'-' ' ' .K
The Italian hysteria was justified on but one ground,
that of imperialistic, conquest.; In demanding the Ad
riatic be an Italian lake;- the : Somnno party, followed
frankly in the steps of Bismarck, and their success would
mean the establishment of an ..Adriatic Alsace-Lorraine.
Such' a result woidd be folly for the allies and fatal for
Italy. It is possible a compromise may be effected re
garding Fiuine, as a sop to Italian pride, but no compro
mise can be made regarding an outlet for the Jugo-Slars
to tne sea; Italy tougnt and tought well ior the destruc
tion of her traditional enemy Austria. The formation of
a Jugo-blav state is a seal on that destruction. In the ex
citement of victory to replace Austrial oppression with
Italian oppression would indeed be snatching the fruits
of Italy's heroic sacrifices. In a scenario of temperament,
there is no place for the logic of enlightened self interest
perhaps, but with the fire works ovciy there is hope that
itaiy win see ner radiant crests of victory to be racial jus:
tice in the clearer light of her own. interest and common
sense. " . ."''.'-: ' ;. ; "Ux rf4:-: u :.'.'.!: ''. .
