TALKS IN FAVOR
OF VICTORY Li
H. W. Scott. United Stntcs dee
trio euniicr, who is tonrinir tlio state
of Orceuu helping the Victorv loan
by tellinir the people of his exper
iences in Europe ami uririntr them to
io their dutv by subscribing to this
Inst loan, talked to the children of
the Wnshintrton school this morning.
Mr. Scott's talk was in part a les
son in ceocrapliv which the children
will not fonret nuioklv.- He told them
of the minine of nitro in Chile, the
prices of the material, the customs
of the people and how in payment
Chile exacted the price of six sub
marines which we so badly needed
ourselves nt that t;me. An nveraee
of 12 vessels a dav leave Chile laden
with nitro to be taken to some port
on the Atlantic coast. The children
were amazed to learn that where nitro
is mined it has not rained for 1000
years. . ;
Punnnia was described and the hu
morous wnv Mr. Scott has of impress
ins the difference in height of the
two oceans pleased the children. The
speaker next dwelt upon the habits of
the people of Colombo, those of
Jamaica and tho other islands of the
West Indies. 1
. The propaganda of the Germans in
South America was explained and
then' followed a few stories of the
treachcrv of the Germans to our
American bovs in France.' A soldier
saw a waiting' cat nailed to the wall
'and immediately undertook to remove
it. That action caused a mine to
which it was attached to explode and
killed many soldiers. Similar stories
of such cruelty and treachery of the
despised Germans will help the bovs
and cirls to remember the war and
to extend no favors to- the Germans.
Sor will thev foreet to do as Mr.
Scott asked thein to spend 4heir
.summer earnings in buying thrift
stamps and to remind dad that the
war is not vet paid for and that he
should buv a Victory bond.
. Mr. Scott will speak in Ashland to
night and Klamath Falls tomorrow,
telling the people in those towns as
he did here at the theaters Inst night,
about his experiences with the 5th
and 6th marines at the battle of Bel
leon Woods last July. " "
