BIG OIL STATION
10 BE BUILT AT
NORTH BEND. Ore., April 28.-
Plans for the early L-ods:ract;onof a
200-foot wharf and an oil station to
cost between $40,000 and 150,000
for. use by the government bar dredge
Michle, oh property purchased by the
federal government, hree miles west
of this city, were announced by James
S; Polhemus of the United States
engineers' office of Portland..
"from a recent survey it Is learned
that the Coos Bay bar has shoaled
from a depth of 30 feet at low water
to less than 18 feet, or more than 1
feet during the winter months, 'and
the removal of this great accumula
tion of sand will require the constant
operation of the dredge Michle until
late In the fall. . :
The shoaling of the channel on the
bar to such an extent during the
rough weather, when the operation
oi the derdge Is impossible. Is re
garded by Polhemus and other engi
neers as a clear and conclusive dem
onstratlon that a satisfactory depth
of water cannot be maintained , by
dredging operations without the aid
of a north and south. Jetty to prevent
the sand from being deposited by the
winter storms.
