The Achilles heel in dhe Colonel's annor is his 'insin
cerity. .Take the League of Nations, for example. . Before
the covenant was amended, Harper's "Weekly was not
opposed to .the league principle, mercy no! but it was
opposed to any .international arrangement which violated
the Monroe, Doctrine, whichfmade it possible for a great
world power like the United States to have no more vpting
power tiian the smaller nations. . , .- .
Now with the Monroe doctrine .recognized, .aud ' Avith
the voting power moditied,. Colonel llarvejr! voices no ap

upon the provision which gives the' United States with
its companion world powers, control, and leaves the small
nations, particularly ,the South "American republics, .-out
in the cold.- ; . , ' , ,.,.. .-,-.. ?';-..
In other words the redciibtabTo eolonel is against' the
league if it restricts'Americn control, he is against the
league if American control is not restricted. iOnly " love
to hatred turned" could manoeuver a man as clever as tlie
eblonel- into a position so ridiculous and indefensible.-:
AMERICA HAS WHIP HAND.
AS a matter of actual fact, "America can ) get along
more cotnfortbly without a League of Nations and a
peace of justice and equity, than' can Italy," France or
Great Britain. Her mission to Paris was not one of self
interest" but one. of disinterested devotion, to theawelfare
of humanity and the world; If it conies to a, shew down,
the United States holds the whip hand. At the nioinent
it looks dark, but a shrewd gambler with a knowledge' of
the true situation would not endanger his reputation by

Havoc of the Bird Gun
To the Editor:, Amdng . nature's
choicest blessings at this season of
the yeaare the beauty- and fra
grance of ho fruit blossoms, and the
sweet melody of the song birds of
the Medford valley. .
But strange to sa,y there are many
who do not seem to , appreciato thi.s
rich heritage of the springtime.- .
On our way home the other even
ings from the. business center, of. our.
ity, we passed two boys,, each yilth a
small gun in his :hani; ana upon
overhearing seme of the conversation
with .a group of .other boys, pledging
them to secrecy, of a certain sort, im
mediately we became suspTcipus of
the purpose of the guns In the Hands
of.thpse two boys. .' ;
About an hour later, suspicion be
came fact' when we sa)v .these two
lads coming thru an alley with their
guns oyer .their shoulder, and dan
gling from the hand of one lad were
three lifeless little birds not spar-.
rows, but house finches. or red ,polls,
birds that are amoiig the sweetest
warblers that trill their rkh delight
ful, melody, to us the ; livelong day
who build their nests and .rear their
little ones in the old: honeysuckle
bower, or among the roses and vines
that elamber over the trejllses S3
close, to:, the house. ; Itiseemo they
almost, ask for our protection. ' '
upon inquiry we learned the boys
had been requested three. times by.,
man in the neighborhood not to
shoot at the birds, but despite the
requests, the boys slyly crept near
the bushes and brought down a beau
tiful, malo bird while In the glory o(
his song, and carried -hint dangling
along with the other two they had
killed, his beautiful splashes iof crim
son on bead and breast protesting in
mute appeal against such bird tragedies.-
' ' ' -..'-' ''.I .. ;'-.
: Questioning the boys as to their
knowledge of the laws for the protec
tion of the song birds and the fines
Imposed for killing them, they hung
their heads, and said they sold them
to a man in town who bought them
to eat. ; , '
.SJlscreiliting this story that any
man in Medford, would he guilty of
encouraging the boys: to break the
law, we .thought it more likely they
wero . thus - trying lto . shlehl - them
selves. ; All. we. could do at the time
was to secure the names of the two
boys. ! )
'i,We coujd npt help .noticing . tfie
entire , absence, of Me song birds in
our vicinity that evening. Not a bird
note anywhere. Even the robin who
built her, nest pn: the ledge tinder the.
cornice of. the, house, .and who regu
larly every evening sang his- clear,
strong, but tender notes at twilight
