In other words Mr. Burleson applied the principles of
private business conducted lor private gam, to . public
business conducted for public service, aud according to
his reports the system worked in Washington just as it
did in Texas. The books showed a balance on the right
side of the ledger, and the Postmaster General was sat
isfied. - ' , ,
, But no one else was. Perhaps no one else was satis
fied in Texas, although the record- is not so conclusive.
At any rate Mr. Burleson's methods impaired the postal
service during the .war,, antagonized the American public
regardless of party, produced a labor situation which now
threatens to tie up the telephone and telegraph service of
the country, and finally called forth a protest from the
Wilson club of Massachusetts, demanding the removal of
the Postmaster General before he had completely wreck
ed the Democratic party.; ';; -
The general esteem in which Mr. Burleson is held will
be indicated, no doubt, by the willingness of even our
most partisan Republicans, to, aid in the rescue of the op
position, by doing all they can to secure a prompt com
pliance with this demand. y y 'y r
