Colonel John L, May, adjutant gen

Hall of the adjutant general's de
partment, arrived in the city this
morning and remained until this
noon inspecting local national guard
conditions, after which they left for
Ashland to look after the company
conditions there. While they were
walking about town with Captain
Canaday, Colonel May, who com
manded the Third Oregon regiment
in France, expressed a desire to per
sonally meet tbe Medford Duslness
man who was daddy ot five soldiers
in the war, whereupon the captain
conducted the visitors to the Crater
Lake hardware store and introduced
them to Samuel Leonard.

A. B. Williams received word to-
day that his brother, C. R, Williams,
was operated on at Tacotua Monday
and his left leg taken off. - He with-'
stood the operation in good shape
and, no further complications arising
is expected to recover. The injured
man has been laid up since last De
cember with both legs broken, as a
result of being knocked off a railroad
trestle while making repairs. Infec
tion has retarded complete recovery
and it became necessary, at last, to
cut off one of the legs. '
