They passed thru here on this fore-
' noon's southbound passenger train
enroute from an Inspection of Van
couver barracks and Camp Lewis, to
make an inspect on of the military
posts and camps In the San Francisco
vicinity. From there they will visit
, the posts at Ran Diego and hurry
' back to Washington.
Secretary Baker and General
March did not leave their Pullman
compartment during the stop here
and were tn the midst of an earnest
i conversation when the Interviewer
abruptly pushed their . compartment
. door open and entered. He was at
once made welcome,' however, as he

The distinguished appearing and
companionable General March had
nothing to say during this part of
the interview,; but with Mr. Baker
appeared interested in "this locality
as a mlperal country and both made
inquiries as to whether much chrome
was mined In the vicinity of Medford.
- Neither did Mr. Baker care to dis
cuss the report that Senator Cham-
herlaln, who Is chairman Of the sen
ate committee on military affairs,
was barred, from, going to France
and Europe on the same steamer
with Mr. Baker, because he Is per
sona non grata with the Wilson ad
ministration, i Mr. Baker said that
he had said all he cared to say on
this subject in thet Portland news
papers. . And practically all he said
when interviewed in Portland was
"Preposterous nonsense." -
