RIOT FOLLOWS CRIME WAVE
ARREST OF SAILORS
LONDON, March 0, Cnrnoml C.
U. Zimmerman nml l'rivnte L. N. Wil
son, American military policemen, who
wero injured during the fighting to
day between London police nnd sol
diers and sailors? nro resting ntlietlv
at a hospital tonight. It is not known
how seriously tbev wero hurt.
Tho trouble began when Zimmerman
unit Wilson demanded that tho civil
police turn over to them two American,
sailors who hud been arrested in the
vicinity of Eagle llipit on a eharuo of
playing crops. The argument grew
hitter and finally tbo policemen drew
their batons and severely bent both
soldiers.
American, Canadian, Australian
and a few British soldiers who were
lounging near, portested mid fojlowcd
tho policemen with tho four Ameri
cans to the Hoy street police heud
iputrlers. The crowd trew less dein
oiiKtrittive nfter the officers and their
prisoners had entered tbo building, but
nn unfounded report that Zimmerman
wiih dead lend to lb rents to storm the
station. The police charted on the
crowd nnd William Van Sice and VA
win Houlund were injured.. Tho
crowd finally dispersed. An Ameri
can military officer who arrived at
the station soon a Her. demanded pos
session of the four men injured in
Hie first melee, his demand being
granted. A number of uninjured men
were nrrcsted, but so fur no charges
have been preferred against them.

SWEEPS ENGLAND
AFTER ARMISTICE
LOaIGII, -(CuncfcporiJtiice of Use
Asosciuled l'rcss.l Crime bus been
on the increase in Fnglund since the
signing of tbo armistice nnd, in offi
cial quarters, 'particularly Scotland
Yard, it is attributed to a great extent
to soldiers on leave. It is the natural
result of idle hands, the officials suv.
Attendunts nt centers where leave"
men congregate seem to bo of one
opinion as to whv soldiers now com
mit petty crimes. Tliev snv the bearing
of the soldiers has chunged since
hostilities ended.' When they obtain
ed a brief respite from the fighting
tbev still felt that tbev were engaged,
still had something to do nnd some
thing to think about. People who are
nt the Young Men's Christian Asso
ciation and Hed Cross centers 5nv
that now there is no interest for the
soldiers at the front and little thev
can do in the cities, us few had much
money. They are idle nicntulv and
phvsicullv. - ' '
There has been n tendency to blame
overseas men fof much of the crime,
not Americans ns comparatively few
of, them are, on leave in Knslund. butj
n cicouuiiii iuri ouiciiii aus siacu
that the Knglish troops nro as much
responsible ns their colonial brothers.
"I am nfrnid 'there will belittle
abatement in tho outbreak until de
mobilization lins been considerably
iidvnneed," he said. "If. in the mean
time, the military authorities could
devise some scheme for kecpingg the
men more in the country districts nnd
less in the cities, things miaht bo bet
ter than they nrc.. City lounging in
variably has a worse effect on a
man than country idling."
