There's o Reason"
WARSAW, Feb. 25. (By Associ
ated Press.) Forty pounds of wheat
flour Is being sold at Moscow for
olght hundred rubles and sugar Is
rifty rubles a pound, with both com
modities virtually unobtainable.
Starving horses which fall In the
streets are stripped of their flesh be
fore they are cold. Money Is of little
value and jewels and works of art
bring little when traded. Thefts In
these lines are therefore Infrequent.
In order to get food a trader must
offer clothes. Women refugees from
Moscow wore recently beld up at
Smolensk, It Is said, and their cloth
ing was stolen, but ihe soldiers dis
dained to take a beautiful pearl neck
lace, so that Its owner was able to
sell tho necklace here.
Fuel Is so scarce that woodon
houses In tho suburbs have been torn
down for fuel. Fine furniture baB
also been used for tho same purpose.
Stores have been closed by merchants
but the Bovlet government has taken
over some of the larger places of
business, where only Bolshevlkl are
served. ' Flower shops and hair dres
sers do a fine business, about thirty
ot these places being open. Leon

itussla Is beset by all kinds of dis
eases, typhus being particularly pre
vulaut. Vodka substitutes are being
used and have a weakening effect on
the people.
Kerosene and benzine are report
ed to be common drinks. The large
number of deaths In Moscow bas led
to a decree making the undertaking
business a state monopoly.
