W. M. Holmoa Friday received no
tice from the war departmont of the
death of his son, Joseph Thomas
Holmes, October 12 from woun 'i re
ceived In battle October 10 on the
Argonne front. He was 24 years
of age and a nallvo of Jackson coun
ty, residing with Ills parents In the
Griffin Creek Bection. At the out
break of the war, ho enlisted with
Company 7, C. A. C. and left with
the company for Fort Stevens. He
wus later transferred, with others of
the company to tho tiTith field artil
lery, and was a member of flattery
K. He sailed for France last spring
and went to tho front at the time of
tho St. Mlhlel drive. He was well
known and popui.tr among a larh'e
circle of friends In the valley who
sincerely mourn his heroic dealh and
extend sympathy to his parents In
their hour of bereavement.
Letters received from Medford
members of tho battery several
weeks ago, told of Holmes being se
verely wounded by shrapnel and be
ing In an army hospital. Ills parents
at once wired to Washington and to
the lied Cross to secure Information,

Applegato Lumber company received
notice of the death of his son, Ray
mond M. Ward, In Krsnce, Oct. 12.
but did not say whether he was

Mr. Ward left today for Kolsom, Cal..

cause of his death. He has not heard
from hlin since he enlisted, except a
card from the government that he
had landed safely In Franco. Ho was

cember 15, It was learned here to
day, in anticipation of the arrival of
Cuba's Bugar crop In January. Modi
fication of restrictions affecting sug
ar consumption will become effective

The sugar divisions, which hold
complete control over distribution by
refiners and thru the refiners, over
turers and dealers as a war time
measure to conserve this commodity.
Manliafcturers will, however, be re
quired to limit their purchases each
to a thirty-day supply until the free
arrival of the Cuban raw sugar about
January 10 cr 15.
While restrictions on the use of
sugar in public places will continue
In effec four pounds of sugar will
be allowed to each person each month
in the homes, beginning Monday or
Tuesday.
