'"pill-: report l' Professor K. 0. Ifeimer of the Southern
A Oregon Kxpei-iineiitiil station, upon (lisinftclants for
pear blight, jmlilished elsewhere in this issue, should be
read by every orehardi ;t as it contains information vital
to the fruit, grower.
Blight (baceili:;, an lovorns) is the worst menace aced
by the orchardist, .particularly the pear grower. Its rav
jipes have dest roved thousands u)on thousands of aci'es of
valuable orchard all over the world. Its control iias occu
pied the attention of )oinolo;;ists, pathologists and scien
tists of liurope and America for half a century and no
cure has yet been found. All that can be done with the
affected tree is to cut out the affected parts, and sterilize
the wounds.
Despite this drastic remedy, infection has often contin
ued and the partial failure of the surgery led Professor
Keimer to make an exhaustive study by experimentation
of disinfectants used. As a result he has ascertained that
the standard disinfectant, corrosive sublimate, did not kill
the bacteria, in the tree wounds, though effective on the
cutting knife, but that cyanide of mercury did, while it in
turn was not effective as a disinfectant on the knife. This
will necessitate the orchardist using cyanide of mercury
for tree wounds, and corrosive, sublimate for his cutting
tools. Incomplete, tests indicate that fonialdehyde may
prove the ideal disinfectant for both trees and knives, tho
ihe experiments have not been completed.
If the fruit grower carefully cuts out his hold-over in
fections, both in the tree and its infected roots during the
winter when Might bacteria are dormant, and promptly
cuts out the inaction when it appears in the spring, usiiw
the t wo disinfci :uits, his damage will be reduced to a
niininmnj, and alter a few years of thorough cleaning-up,
the disease will be eliminated from the valley. California
orchardists also claim that spring spraying of oil emulsion
acts as a preventative as it keeps off the insects that carry!
the bacteria.
This study of disinfectants by Professor Keimer again
emphasizes the value to the community of the Southern
Oregon Kxperiinent Station under his direction. His dis
covery of sulphur as the ideal fertilizer for alfalfa lias paid,
many times the cost of the station to the farmers of the
country. His efforts to secure a blight resistant pear stock
attracted national attention and he was sent by the federal
government to interior China, the original home of both the
apple and pear as well as blight bacteria, bringing back
native stock from which he hopes to solve the problem.
The experiment station lias earned a more liberal sup
port from the state than it has ever received and it is hoped
our legislative delegation will see that it gets it for it is
the only state institution of any kind in southern Oregon.
